I found this rock near Miles City on an tributary to the Yellowstone. Buddy at work has a dad that has a saw and he cut off this side... I just sprayed it with lacquer... its a softball size chunk of fossil stromatolite... imo This is a dandy Ystone agate...cant wait to polish or cut or something to see the inside better! This is a big piece of green jasper that has some really cool little red inclusions... Close up:

my "stromatolite" COULD also be a chunk of metamorphosed oyster bed??

Don't know, but the first one looks like it could be petrified rabbit pellets!

Just another specimen... My buddy has been breaking and chiseling agate straight out of Basalt in Central Washington... I am not sure how big this piece is... but its beautiful nonetheless!

I am 99.5 percent sure you have stromatolites there. I find a lot of it here (many yards full of it) and if it did not grow here it was pushed here from Montana. Most of it is pretty dull but if you find it with color it is fantastic. Jim

Beautiful materials, hornseeker. The first stromatolite would be too pretty for me to cut. Looks like an awesome display piece. Really like the red dots in the green one. Does the last one, the agate, have serpentine in it? Don't know, but the first one looks like it could be petrified rabbit pellets! ROFL, Mrs. Pat!!

I found a couple nice chunks of the green jasper at Fallon. I eventually am going to try to turn the big one into a sphere.

Im not sure what serpentine looks like, but the piece is basically jasper... with those little white and red inclusions!
I'll post more if I cut them up and such!

I asked at the Bozeman May meeting and they said it was not serp, but was jasper.

Thank you for letting us know that the stunning green material is jasper, Mark K. It is similar in color to some of the Washington serpentine that Mattatya placed in Helen's newbie Traveling Rock Box.
