fantastic5, thank you for posting a pic of your cart, and for your suggestion to tip the drivers if we hitch a ride. Would anyone like to meet at a certain time/day at the site, maybe possibly meet at kap's stand?

Would anyone like to meet at a certain time/day at the site, maybe possibly meet at kap's stand? When we get closer to the weekend lets try and set a time. My plans may have been derailed. My daughter was recently headhunted by Troy University in Alabama. The school had not even hit our radar, but they are offering her full tuition, room and board. She and I have been looking at her schedule and that may be one of the only weekends we could go look at the school. We had been looking at small liberal arts schools, but none of them have offered that level of scholarship, the best we have gotten so far is full tuition at Emory and Henry in Virginia. Happy and a little disappointed all in one.

Although it's about 2 weeks before the dig, I wanted to ask if anyone has definite plans for attending the Graves dig, and what days will you be there?? I still hope that all of us may get the opportunity to meet. ETA - orrum, if you were serious about planning on camping out in jamesp's yard, why don't you and Susan come to the free Graves Mtn. dig if you're in Georgia then??

orrum, I'm hoping that your dad will be okay. Will he have the procedure at Emory? Does he live in Georgia? I sure hope that you and Susan will be able to make it to the dig. Would enjoy meeting y'all! fantastic5 posted a lot of beautiful specimens that she and her husband found at Graves. captbob also posted an awesome lazulite from Graves, too. From the GA Mineral Society's website, here's some pretties that can be found at the site: Rutile, Kyanite, Lazulite, Iridescent Hematite, Pyrophyllite, Pyrite, Ilmenite, Fuchsite, Barite, Sulfur, variscite, woodhouseite, crandallite, strengite, phosphosiderite, cacoxenite, blue quartz, quartz crystals, etc. If you look on the first page of this thread, you'll find information that has links. There's history on the site, photos of Graves Mountain and specimens found there. They will have golf carts to transport people to and from the location, booths of goodies ( kap will have a booth set up) and food. If you and Susan stay in Georgia for a week or two, you may want to head about an hour south to LaGrange to the Hogg mine. It's 35 dollars/person for a day's worth of diggin' to find beryl, rose quartz (some with asterism), schorl tourmaline, and I heard that they found some garnets at the Hogg, too. We have not been to the Hogg and we've lived in LaGrange for a while. Keep hoping that they'll knock the entry fee down, but it ain't happenin.'

Jeans the quartz will cut you if you are digging and not surface collecting. Also dont wear anything you really want to ever be clean again!

Turns out Saturday is my daughters senior prom so I'll be staying home and helping her get ready. Wish all the diggers well and I'm sure you will all have a great time! gingerkid if you are even remotely sensitive to inhaling dust, rust and dirt I strongly recommend a mask. The middle upper pit where you may find the best iridescent hematite is very dusty. I ended up fashioning a mask with a bandanna. I now keep dust masks as part of my 'rock tool box'.

I hope your daughter enjoys her prom night, fantastic5. Did she make a decision on which college she will attend? Maybe we could meet you in October at the dig, along with cpdad and other members that may want to go then. Thank you for your suggestion to carry a dust mask with us. I know you wanted to attend the dig for your birthday, and wanted to wish you an early Happy Birthday wish!! Happy Birthday, Ann!! cpdad, thank you for your invitation! Thunder69, will you and your friend be heading over to the Hogg? If you do, please let me know. I might be able to convince Rick to go out there. Please have a safe trip!! garock, are you going? orrum? broseph82? jamesp - are there garnets anywhere closeby Graves to find? Please let me know if there are any, please.

gingerkidTonya and I will be there with the kiddos. Jim def needs to chime in on the garnet question, but if green schist is seen you know garnets will be around. Just takes a little bit of driving and looking.

I have only snuck in there illegally when I was younger. All I remember was strange colored rocks in every direction. And some mineral polluted water. That place is an eye opener. World class rutile and great kyanite, never aware of garnets.

ROFL, I remember you mentioning that you snuck in there one time, James. Thanks, jamesp! I wondered if there were any places that you might recommend that we stop and look for garnets on our way to/from Graves.

Thank you for the link to the GA minerals on John Betts' website, broseph82. I'm embarrassed, Thunder69, lol! Did not know that your brother is an RTH member. Did you modify the cart you were going to use for rock hounding? We'll be there on Saturday, so y'all come on out there then.
