I keep a journal of what gravel bars are exposed and accessible for each discharge level posted by the USGS e.g. waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=14174000Today, the river was low enough to get to one of my favorite local spots, so I took a long lunch and went hounding for an hour. It was glorous to just be out by the river for a little bit; sunshine on face; that sound of gravel beneath your feet with the water slipping by the shore. Something about that just takes the stress away. The icing on the cake is that I did find some material to bring home, including a fairly complete carnelian arrowhead (the first arrowhead I have found in this river). Pictures of finds to come after I get home and have access to a camera.

That is awesome! How clever to watch the stats to know when to go... you have a huge jump on those who do not do that!

That is awesome! How clever to watch the stats to know when to go... you have a huge jump on those who do not do that! The USGS keep up-to-date info for a lot of rivers all around the US, part of my daily routine to check the status of the ones within a 20 min drive
here is a selection of rocks that I picked up, was clear that it hadn't been hounded since the water receded
carnelian
sard
some close ups of interest
black jasper, never found one so dark
agate and jasper
cool rock

you got some very cool stuff. I don't think I've ever seen black jasper like that one! The agates make me think of some found around here. keep posting! I love living vicariously!

That's an awesome lunch break that you took along the river and nice score, cobbledstones! Haven't seen a carnelian arrowhead before. Your Oregon carnelian finds are beautiful.
