That is as close as we've come - but I can't get past the slowness of this unit. A lathe of any kind would have to be turning a lot faster I think.

that amazing Tommy! I didn't realize that armature flipped up that
also got to remark those water driven grinding wheels is really cool ! you posted them before-- when you went to Germany?

do you know what that adjustment screw on the right side does?
It looks like you could mount some type of wheel in the collars and when you flip the armature over it would clamp the work piece That set screw could incrementally lower the wheel to the work piece
but why any of this would happen I have no clue

do you know what that adjustment screw on the right side does? It opens and closes the space between the two aluminum "wheels." It only moves it about 1/4 of an inch all together though.

No identifying marks? Letrrs numbers.... ? None. The cover around the motor is home made - the original cover probably had information on it.

After 50 odd years of prototype machine work and tool making, I can say without a doubt that machine was home made / prototype. It strikes me as such because of the way it is fabricated, has a solid look but not quite a finished ready for market appearance, also some parts appear to be missing. It doesn't appear to be any center business between the plates to make a cutter or wheel run true but I would guess that is what was clamped between the plates.
My guess as to what it does ?
That might have been lost when the man that designed it last walked away from it !
I have some of those type items in my garage and basement, when I check outta this world and the relatives hold the auction, the auctioneer will start the bidding by saying----
I haven't a clue folks but it has something to do with rocks or it was used to make fishing tackle !

I was thinking lathe, at first, too. Then I was thinking that it was a tiny press for watches or lockets or something. I think it helps screw or press the front and back pieces together. Maybe the discs that come out are only one size set of many sizes. The sizes would relate to the size of the watch or case or whatever. You notice that the pieces have a ridge on one side? That ridge is what contacts the outer edge of the object and the screw is to gently hold everything in place until the machine can press/screw it together. This could be a machine that has been adapted to this purpose. Or... it was made and used to make the automaton in the movie Hugo.

Interesting I thought that might be. But from the pictures it didn't seem to line up. so we can assume that it tighten down on something held between the collars agatemaggot bring up a good point though how would you center anything ?

if it was a press, it would not have to rotate. If it was made to screw something together, only one side would rotate or they would rotate in opposite directions. It's possible that the aluminum wheels don't really belong on it but were put there to confusilate us?

Heehee – this is kind of fun. I’m glad it wasn’t just me who was stumped. The marble-maker comment by catmandewe had me going till I finally realized the two sides would have to turn in opposite directions. Lee I was wondering that too - the aluminum wheels stick out like a sore thumb.

Back after the Quartzsite and Tucson shows....ahhhhh peace and quiet. ) Things I see about this. Too slow for a key machine. Not a lathe of any sort. Too dirty for any watch makers machine. Not oily....so it didn't cut metal. Not likely a press of any kind. No water supply tubing or components or catch pan. The machine base attachments points are slotted to allow for movement and adjustment in it's mounting. Agreeing with agatemaggot....it does not appear to be a finished, marketed product; probably a prototype or single purpose unit for a specific task. All the hardware are allen head cap screws, well made with precision, not flimsy. Possibly made by a machinist or tool and die maker...definetely someone familiar with and access to a machine shop. The two aluminum washers are machined similar to flange washers. Do they have recess on the shaft facing side to keep them centered in place on the shaft? I see a wingnut on the stop arm indicating some frequency of attachment to that point. The question is....did it hold a piece or object for grinding, machining....or did it hold a cutter or grinding wheel of some sort to work on a workpiece? I lean toward the liklihood of it being for a preforming and shaping operation of some sort....or that's where I would be inclined to try to use it.

OK like someone said we will probably never know what it is or was intended to be by its creator – BUT I believe it has life left, maybe even as a lapidary device and I want to send it to someone who has participated in this thread and yes that includes orrum. If you have participated in this thread and you want said machine I’ll send it to the first person who responds. The thing is you have to promise if you get it working again you’ll post a picture or video of what you are using it for – even if you tear it apart and make something else out of it haha. The following people are eligible. If I missed anyone please speak up. spiritstonejakesrocksorrum@wampidy snowmomjamespgingerkidmohsFossilmanfantastic5@shotgunner agatemaggotcatmandewerockjunquielparkermikeyrocks
