Tommy, Wow! That is very generous of you! Have you considered fixing it? If you insist on sending it to a new home, I'll take pics of it and see if Rick can repair it. He loves tinkering on stuff. But, it would probably cost a fortune to send it to someone.

I'd love to play with it Tommy, but why don't you pass it on to one of the younger guys to figure out. I've got more toys than time to play with them.
I can see some useable parts in there for someone who loves to tinker around & build things.
Thing that has me wondering is the wide cogged pulley on just one end. Seems like that pulley is meant to have some lateral travel in it. The arm with the slot & thumb screw was obviously meant to hold a tool of some sort. Possibly a lathe cutting tool.

Tommy, I think it would be a good idea for the member that receives the machine to pay for shipping. Flux capacitor firing sequence resonator interface point collision magnification alignment oscillating dynometer based centrifugal grinding modulator. ROFL! Thank goodness orrum's spellchecker didn't tweak his post.

No worries on the cost - I actually think it might fit in a LFRB. If not I'll pack it up and slow-boat it.

Yeah I'm a little disappointed in you jamesp hahaha Well now that I went back and read Jan's gingerkid post and realized she didn't actually say she wanted it yet, you are next in line for it. Just think of all the study time and sleepless nights you could have with it in your possession heehee.

Or it might get converted to something ridiculous. Can you call that guy and ask him what it is ? Curious minds having meltdowns. Certainly he knows what it is. curious lot on this forum.

May be a mystery forever. Like a movie with a hollow ending. Causes brain damage.

Yah, that right hand pulley has to allow for movement of the right side of the machine.

Thank You, Tommy! When Rick and I receive the mystery machine from Tommy and if we are unable to refurbish it or do anything with it, I would like to send it to someone that participated in Tommy's thread.

I would love to tinker with it if you pass it on. I would be willing to do the same and pay postage both ways. Jim

I have been thinking about this thing off and on since you posted. Do the two sides rotate at different speeds? are the gears sized differently from one side to the other? I wonder if it wasn't a pedal operated thing at one time and somebody motorized it later on? Hard to visualize, I am still hoping to find out what it is/was. Will be cool to see what it might become! Cool Idea Tommy!

One of my hobbies is geneaology. That is essentially tracking down history. The previous owner had friends and family. Interviews with them about what the owner produced in his lapidary work might shed some light. Did he make beads, jewelry, just polish rocks? Carve them? what kind of rock did he work with (Tommy, you got slabs and rough and stuff, too, yes?) If he was a member of a local rock club then somebody he knew may have watched him work with this machine or heard about it, even neighbors. The information is out there somewhere lurking in somebody's memories. I suppose it just depends on how much time and effort can be put into digging answers to those questions up. This has been (and I hope will continue) a fun thread.

This has been (and I hope will continue) a fun thread. No slabs or rough - just machine stuff - and sorry to say there is no way of tracking it down. It's one of those deals where my ex-father-in-law got a cart full of crap at a garage sale where the family was clearing out an old guy's junk and didn't know what any of it was other than it was lapidary related. Knowing I was into lapidary he stashed it all in his shed for many months waiting for me to come over. In the stuff was a flat lap and if I wanted it I had to take everything that came with it. There was a rotten pump and dozens of hoses and unrecognizable parts etc. The only things I kept were the lap and this little machine. Everything else went in the garbage.
