O.K. decided to get a Ameritool Grinder/Polisher. (Next month) Here's my list.
1) Ameritool Universal 8" Complete Includes one 180 grit diamond lap, 325, 600, & 1,200 mesh diamond sanding discs, polish pad with 14,000 diamond compound, and four backing plates. 2) 80 Grit 8" Diamond Facet Top Lap NON PSA NON PSA Backed 8" diamond top lap in 80 grit. Must be used with a backer or master lap. - Do I need an additional backing plate besides the ones I get with the package? 3) 8" SPONGE DISC 8"sponge disc can be used as a resilient backer under felt or leather discs - Can I use this under the "polish pad"? Anything else recommended? In the package the grit jumps from a 1200 mesh diamond sanding disc to a polish pad with 14000 diamond compound. Anything diamond grit in-between that I should consider? Thanks,
James

Welcome. I don't use the Ameritool machine, but it has a good reputation on here. I do use the Ameritool flex laps 220, 325, 600, 1200, & 3000. They are great laps. I would add a 3K btw the 1200 & 14K. Have fun.

Sorry, I'm a bit late here. I use the 3000 (orange) and the 6000 (yellow). The 3000 is a big help. I don't know if the 6000 is that much use (haven't tried a side-by-side test). You should get another brown disk (325?) right off the bat, I go through a lot of those compared to the other disks. Also, the Purple (280?) is good. I have tried metal sanding disks, even the finer grits, but I really like the flexible discs.
Here's another tip: get some tubing and create a drain to a bigger bucket (rather than the dinky little drain cup that comes with it).
80/180 is a good combination for rough grind.
Have fun, you're going to love your new toy!

Thanks!
Anyone use the Diamond Lapidary Faceting Flat Laps they have at Amazon?
They are sold by HANS LAPIDARY TOOL AND MACHINE.
Not the metal (aluminum I guess) ones.
1.1 oz., flexible, and stick to the regular backing plates so weight should not be a factor for the Ameritool.
I figure if I need more discs later I can get them there.
Thanks,
James

They have been listed since Jan. 2014 but no reviews there yet.
Was hoping someone has got one and if the quality is good or so-so or

Have fun, you're going to love your new toy! I use the yellow, which I thought was 8K, for softer stones only. I looked at Kingsly & Ameritool web sites & they no longer list the yellow, maybe it's been discontinued. The Purple is 220. Rich

Interesting. That's cheaper than the Ameritool brand for sure.
Yeah, yellow is 8000, pghram is right. And also right I guess about purple being 220. I get so used to just calling them by their colors . . .

At the time he was selling direct from China, I believe. Rich

They might still shipped be from China. Amazon doesn't say. (not that I could see)
