I just bought a used Gem Sonic ultrasonic drill, but without the ultrasonic generator. If anyone has the same drill, one like it, or other info about ultrasonic drills, I want to pick your brain!
I'm hoping that I can buy or build a generator. Copies of documentation would be good too. Lynn

I found a picture on a Chinese site that shows the power specs. 19.5 KHz. wind-cloud.com/wind5o.htm - scroll down about halfway. The generator shows only one knob. I assume that adjusts the power, but not the frequency. I like the Highland Park one you linked to. It lets you adjust both power & freq. I'll have to look into theirs & see if they sell the generator separately. Lynn

I read that info on the link....I assume my wife's vibrator is underpowered as a substitute? ROFLMAO Oh please don't tell the lovely Susan I said that. She hasn't forgiven me about the sweater shaver incident yet!!!! I had a young horse that would not let me get the hair clippers near his mane to cut a bridle path..... Soooo I duck taped her sweater shaver to the halter and reached thru a crack in the stall door and turned it on! Whoee what a dance he did but by the time the battery's went dead he was calm as a cucumber. The sweater shaver got sorta discombobulated but buzzed and vibrated to the end.... It was a triumphant moment till she got it out of the drawer one day and oh well I won't bore you with what all she called me or threatened to do to me if I ever got into her stuff again to do Jethro Bodine engineering...

I have a LUD150 that originally came from here. I have talked to Bill a number of times and he has been a great help. I also order my drill tube and silver solder from him.
I can tell you that when everything is right it is great. I know that the horn has to be the right shape and length to work correctly. I have almost 30 horns and have found that certain ones only like a certain drill tube size. If everything is not right the vibrations do not end up at the tip so the drill tube will break off or you can not get it to drill.
I found there was a learning curve to figuring the drill out but once that happens all is good. Beats the heck out of diamond drills.
Good luck in building one..............................MrP

MrP, When you say you have 30 horns, do you machine your own? Are they all different shapes? Why so many? You mentioned drill tubes. I've read that tubes are better than solid. What's the max diameter of the tubes that work well with your setup? Lynn

I bought my machine used from a person who bought it from a lady who did drilling for herself and others. The person I bought it from could not get it to work right for him so he gave up on it. I have to tell you I almost gave up at one point also. There is definitely a learning curve to the process.
I do not make my horns and most are shaped the same. The ones that are different do not work very well. I think they have to be shaped for the type and size of the drill.
3mm is the largest that I use with 1mm being used the most for me. I think the tube is the best way to go because the less surface you have on the stone the faster it will drill. Just like a drill bit if you have hard agate it can take time to drill but is still faster then a bit and way cheaper.............................MaP
