My Nephew David use to work at a rock quarry and ran the conveyor belt equipment for the rock crushers...He also had to sort out the rocks, especially the agates and petwood (they had to be dumped off the belt),thrown into the junk pile-so he got to keep what he sorted... Anyhow I get to cut about 50 pounds of it for him...As of now I'm just cutting the ends to see if its worth pursuing any further into the rock.. Also cut a few agates he picked out from the belt too....... This petwood is from the root part of the tree, wild crazy with patterns.. Healed fractures.. Petwood with agate seam... This one has worm and or bug holes all the way through it... This was my favorite cut of the day-really liking it!!! Thought this to be petwood by the outside appearance, but I think not by the interior looks...Still kind of cool though.. Cut some agates for him too........All this rock is from the same area.... Nice Carnelian here!!! Nice agate, with a bit of opal in it.. This agate will get more work done to it-a lot happening inside of it,,,Will stick it and slab it...

Some great looking pieces there! I don't know what part of your nephews job was better getting paid to collect petrified wood and agates, or rock hounding by having the rocks come to him!

Great cuts. A lot of cabbing material. I am particularly fond of the material of the one above the worm holes. I think it is golden oak.

I kept the ends and one slab off each............He just wanted to see what's inside for now........ I told him the hard part is done-he has the rocks to have the work done,if he chooses to do so...............

Christmas! Some of those ends turn into wonderful abstract sculptures when tumbled. Enjoy the activity. Tom

Thumbs up, I wish I could slab some agate of my own. I love that carnelian slab and other cuts, especially the water-level agate and agate seamed pet wood.

Wow a really colorful variety of pet wood there. The carnelian is awesome.
I wonder if that's common practice at quarries? Makes me want to go hunt their throwaway piles.

Tim,most quarries do this-petwood and agate slice tires and raise heck on most things that walk on the gravel, hence taking these type of rocks out of their crushers........... Some quarries will let you pay the tonage fee, something like $10-$20.00 a ton-to look through their garbage piles.....Pays off with two to three nice agates and or petwood.... But some quarries won't let you near them...............

I might ask at the local gravel quarry --- I see the cuts they make in the hills every time I drive down HWY 16 and invariably wonder what kind of goodies must be hidden in there. Interesting possibility, thanks for the info sir.
