Chuck don't quit!!! I live to try your methods and ideas out!!! Facebook is working on a lot of sites by taking away active members, remember they are profiling you and selling that info many times over including uncle sam and the IRS. As a sometimes blog publisher I can tell you that pics draw readership and participation. RTH has a huge problem in that folks find it very difficult to post pics. I am on other forums, not talking rock forums here now, and I post pics direct to the forum. There I said it plain and simple folks, please do not kill the messenger but this problem will ultimately have severe consequences. Please don't get all touchy feely with your emotions, pride and nerves hanging all over your shirt and beat me up. This is a "real" issue and eventually it will come to a real conclusion. My hopes is that conclusion will be the ability to post pics on RTH direct. I cannot afford the data to load a pic to photobucket and then use data again to load it to RTH. Plus the time is in my opinion extraneous. Again please do not slaughter me for pointing out there is a 800 pound gorilla in the room!

orrum - you contribute plenty via text without posting any pictures. You are correct that RTH makes it more difficult to post photos and I am sure that don't help things. I am not going anywhere at the moment. I honestly think this site is a big part of my motivation to create the things I make and my incentive to try things I never thought of before. If I could not share and converse about what I was doing it would take a lot of the fun out of it. Chuck

I have learned so much since I joined rth, members have been incredibly helpful and generous, I love the culture of this board, no abuse tolerated, nothing which is not family friendly, if we get rowdy we put a cap on it before it gets indecent... It is nice to be able to interact with other people who have similar interests. We have all seen the flat stare when the subject of rocks or geology is raised. Drummond Island Rocks, I am of similar mind, what do people think when they go to the trouble to post photos of their hard work, their trips, their questions... and nobody responds, even with a thumbs up? It takes time and effort to take photos, post them to another host, post them here, and write them up. Even informational, helpful comments would be appreciated, so often ignored. I love the huge variety of interests represented here, all things rocks, minerals, fossils. I love the huge knowledge base the membership represents, and would love to see more of these wise and experienced members post photos and explanations about rocks they work with, rocks they hunt, how they do what they do, etc. Hope these boards don't change. Good thread.

RTH is alive and kicking, 1dave! Just summer time, and around the 4th. Although I think our laptop had quite a struggle after a Norton antivirus update caused it to go bonkers. Took two days to finally get everything straightened out. @rocks2dust mentioned to me that Windows 10 will be available soon. Think I may go the jamesp route and get a Mac. Then there's car buying to do...Rick purchased a new, well, it's a 2007 Chevrolet with 28k miles on it. Looks good, too! And fun at the doc's office and trying to get medical records sent to docs.

jamesp omg, ROFL, yes, that's the Hamst ar Box. Toaster box, lol. Rick says it's mine. It's the one I told you that he backed into his Ram 1500 about the first week we had it. Thank goodness it wasn't me that did the 800 dollars worth of damage. (ahem...) Have a KIA hamster that sits in the back window. Rick brought the stuffed toy home from KIA one day. lol. Opened my mouth at the stealership, and asked if they would accept my 2001 1.8 Turbo New Beetle in the trade for Rick's truck along with his Dodge Ram even though the Bug had a bad fuel pump and possibly oxygen sensors. They said yes. Nearly cried when they came to pick it up. Volkswagen sent me a birth certificate for the car, with it's name, Beetlebug (tacky, eh?) and his weight, etc... and parents - me & Rick. I kept the birth certificate. Beetlebug has been sitting for about a year. Think it is a bad fuel pump. Rick did not say nice things when he worked on the car. Guess who was driving it when it stopped on his way home from work. Just kidding.

In my other life I am a writer. One year I worked for a gossip site, and in that way I learned the rhythm of online participation. People are just not around to comment much in the summer. This is true of every category -- fashion, music, gossip, etc, not just hobbies. It's the same on Amazon. Everyone complains that no one buys books in the summer. There is nothing odd about a low number of people leaving posts in late June/early July. It is to be expected. Before that job, I had no idea that such a large percentage of the population actually goes online from their work. I suppose it's jobs like schoolteacher, security guard, desk clerk, etc. that gives you a lot of empty time to look at the internet between customers? RTH is not dying. You simply can't expect the same number of comments and discussion you will get during the school/work year. Although it does make you realize just how many teachers spend their work day hanging out online instead of teaching...

Facebook has, in my opinion, a good share in "steeling" the activity from here. But I think RTH will survive the giant soap-bubble named facebook.
Besides, there are ups and downs in the level of the hobby for each of us. In my case, since we live in our home and have the yard around, the home and garden takes much more of my free time, which I spend gladly in and around the house for all sorts of works. So, less time for lapidary but I still find time to polish some rocks now and then.
The number of members might also be taken into account. I don't know very much about it but it might exist an optimum number of members, just like there is an optimum number of habitants for a town/village. Too few and the village dies, too many and the people cannot know each other well and spread into groups or sink into incognito mode.
Maybe it's me, but I think the peak was here in 2008 ... 2010. At least since I'm a member here. Maybe older members could say otherwise, being perfectly right. I'd like to see that special atmosphere here again.

I don't think so. I like RTH, and don't belong to any other forums. I have three fb friends (daughter, nephew, brother), and don't feel a need for more.
I check RTH when I get up, and before I retire. A thoroughly good habit. I post when I can, other than just liking something. I feel a bit behind in contributing, but will catch up when possible.
Long live RTH!

A Honda Element lives here lilacmoth. Nicknamed 'The Toaster'. It is well loved, would be lost w/out it.

lilacmoth, I'm not sure where you are, but here in Florida you would be ticketed for allowing your dog to drive.

I'd like one of those little cars, buy my 2002 Honda is still going strong. I like it. Son has a Mini, but I like to be higher off the ground.
I've ridden in a low Mercedes SLK many times, and my rear felt in danger always. Too close to the ground!

An Armored Humvee for me! Alas, I can't afford one. Nor the one jamesp posted. Dearest wife bought hers Dave. My truck has 301,000 miles from 2000-2015. Tundra(a Lexus V8) with 4 valves per cylinder. Original. 300K and still has great oil pressure and burns no oil. shhhh, got to whisper that part.

I must admit that I haven't had much to say lately, but RTH gets checked several times per day. I'm working on a new project which is keeping me busy. Some of you who follow the thumbnail minerals thread may have noticed that pictures have been disappearing. I'm in the process of editing all of the pics on photobucket, and putting them all in one album. When I'm finished, I'll re-post all of the missing pics.
My old 1999 Ford F100 has less than 33,000 miles on it. If I can talk mamma into retiring this summer, it'll start getting used for rockin trips.
RTH is alive & well. Things always slow down when the winter weather ends. All those rocks calling to us, and just nice to get outside without freezing our butts off.
