RTH is a phenomenon! Starting as a simple site about tumbling, it quickly spread to encompass the entire rock hobby and drew interested people from all over the world.
Today (25 Jun 2015) RTH has 6,732 members with an average daily attendance of around 130, or about 2%.
Back when I joined there were around 5,000 with 500 attending, roughly 10%.
The good news is we have around 1,300 visitors per day, about 20% of the membership!
I think we are alright!

It's summer, folks are busy. Bet the numbers are much higher for daily attendance the rest of the year.

When fall and winter hit,the attendants is up a bit higher.............Been on this sight for years-it's outlasted quite a few sites I use to belong too.... I belong to a Canada site (Rockhounding) and they have many members, but only three to four people were posting, made it tough to do anything on the site! Tim can concur about that subject......That's why I suggested he join us.....

I am hoping to get back in the swing of things soon. As Tony said, so many things to do and not enough time to do them in.

I love this forum for all the info and pictures, but it's a bit intimidating jumping into the convos since everybody seems to know each other so well. I bet there are many more lurkers who feel like they don't have much to contribute but are soaking up the knowledge.

Joining in on the conversations is a great way to get to know people.

the amount of rock pictures, rock sales, rock auctions, and rock discussions on facebook has really increased the last year or so. some RTH folks have started private groups for auctions and chat.
RTH still has the higher member numbers however. And google search will find RTH, while it can't find private fb groups.

lack of participation leads to further lack of participation. We have a core group of folks that spend their valuable time posting great pictures of all things rock related but then when things are slow there can be very few comments posted in those threads. If people feel nobody is looking at their pictures or don't care enough to comment then why bother taking the time to post them?

I think that pictures are always appreciated, whether someone pats you on the back for posting them or not. Rocks, vacation pics, critters and nature scenes, hell, we even had a "what did you have for dinner" thread once with pictures galore that lasted way too long. We're a pretty visual bunch! Links not explaining what is in the link get ignored by me. And pages of graphs & charts and enough numbers to fill a text book are equally ignored - may be interesting information within, but if my eyes glaze over in the first paragraph, I'm gone. Will leave you with a picture before heading off to accomplish something that will get me an "attaboy" when the boss lady gets home. hmmmm..... okay, this is from our old apartment before we moved into this house 10+ years ago

orrum I am trying to find a new sticker for my truck too... I know I was fast and furious on here and then all but disappeared, but I still very much value what folks share and the camaraderie we share. In my case it was just getting busy plus being injured. Participation is seasonal as in "summer," "fall" etc. but at least in my case (and I suspect others' as well) the seasons of life (career, family, the normal stuff that can swamp us) I've been swamped, but I love tumbling, cutting, polishing and hounding. Don't all run off, this is where I come to see what is going on "out in the world". Facebook just shows me a bunch of noise.

Not really a pat on the back thing so much as wanting some sort of acknowledgement or at least some friendly conversation about what is being posted. I am just as busy as anyone else working 50 hours a week minimum with three kids 10-18 and all the school and sports activities that go with that. It can be frustrating to spend an hour taking pictures, resizing them to upload to photobucket then make the post on RTH while copy pasting all the picture links then look a couple days later and see that 200 people viewed your post but only a couple actually bothered to say anything about it. It has not stopped me yet but it does make me wonder sometimes. This site has been an incredible asset to me and just about all of my progress can be attributed to the knowledge and encouragement I have received here. Hopefully the current slow down is just a phase and it will pick back up soon. Chuck
