Hello all! My husband and I are brand new to the hobby. We just purchased a rotary tumbler and 3 lbs of rough and just jumped in a few days ago. We are very interested in learning as much as we can, specifically about the stones themselves (identification, formation, etc), as well as getting into cutting. Can you recommend some great starting books and/or websites for those topics?? I know there are a ton of options, but I'd love to hear what you think are the must haves for a newbie. Thanks!

Smithsonian Handbooks Rocks and Minerals by Chris Pellant is a good basic guide and reference. $22.00 got mine from Amazon.
The folks on this forum are a mighty source of information with combined years and years of experience in so many facets of rock hunting, rock working and related information. I would be surprised if somebody here could not answer every question you may have. Impressive collective knowledge and wisdom. Neat that you are doing this hobby together! welcome to the forum.

Welcome to RTH, cblynn! Mr. Ron Gibbs, author of "Agates and Jaspers," has an excellent website that I highly recommend checking out. Sadly, Mr. Ron passed away a couple of years ago, but his family has his website online. www.theimage.com/

There is a small field guide called "Rocks, Gems, and Minerals" from St. Martin's Press, really good for beginners and amateurs.
