Two couples from South Texas will be making a rock hounding/sight-seeing trip that will stretch to Glacier National Park. We are seeking ideas for good places to rock hunt, but also people interested in trading materials from your areas for some from ours. If contacted before we leave, we could even try to find specific specimen types. We made the trip 3 years ago and traded with people from Idaho Falls and Butte. They were pleasantly surprised to find Jay had brought his pick-up full of nice quality rocks. I'm not sure what he will be bringing for trade (probably a little of everything). I am not nearly as knowledgeable as he, but will have some petrified palm and red plume, with an assortment of other things. Our route is not set, so we are open to suggestions of good hunting spots. We would like to try our luck with Montana agates. Last time we were there, the rivers were all at historic highs. Is there anywhere to go for sapphires that is not a tourist trap rip-off! I'm definitely returning to Kemmerer for more fish fossils. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Rockhounds are some of the nicest and friendliest people around.

My opinion is that Gem Mountain is a good spot to work gravels for sapphires. We go there at least once a year and always come home with some nice stones. I should be receiving some very soon that we had cut and will post. Granted you are working gravel from a pile that is hauled into the location...but we have always enjoyed ourselves and the owners and workers are very friendly. If your into the gems another spot to check out is over in Idaho for star garnets at Emerald Creek run by the USFS. There is also a leaf fossil spot over near there in Idaho, check the rock hound books. Hunting the Yellowstone gravels will be the opposite of your last trip thru the area as the rivers are low and getting lower....almost August levels already. Enjoy your trip. Cheers.

Thank you for your reply. We went to Gem Mountain last trip and had an enjoyable time. Looks like we may be heading into Utah, as well, now. I've always wanted to hunt leaf fossils. That sounds great to me.

You can always swing off of I-15 in Spencer Idaho and bust up some rhyolite looking for Idaho Precious opal on your way up to Butte......so much houndable land on that drive. Unfortunately, the rockhounding books are sorely lacking as far as Idaho goes. No matter, have a great trip north!!!
