Started this one last night but the superglue wasn't dry & it popped off the stick. I reglued it and let it sit until an hour or so ago. Dang thing let loose again so I finished it by hand. From the same hunk of Sodalite as the knife scales I did. I eyeballed the shape, letting the rock dictate what to do. It's 1 1/16" tall & 3/4" wide. This pic shows a metallic fleck in it... Pyrite I'm gussing. Thanks for looking.

Very nice cab. I put plastic tack on chair glides on my dop sticks and have started to use gorilla glue gel. Cabs don't come off. I'm having the opposite problem, freezing doesn't always let me snap them off. I've had to do a little prying with a utility knife.

I had a huge problem with glues and wax last year so everything I do is by hand now. No sticks, nails, screws, nada.

I was taught the basics including using dop wax about 14 years ago. For the next 12 years, I didn't dop. I hated wax because it wouldn't hold and I didn't like having to stop in the middle or working and dop again. What I didn't like about working freehand was my girdles and chewing up my fingers. I would typically chew up my fingers over the weekend and then they would heal up for the following weekend. If I had holidays and vacation my fingers weren't healed and concern about my finger tips made me uncomfortable working smaller cabs and getting close to the girdle line.
I tried scotch double sided outdoor tape and dop sticks but it wasn't even as good as wax. I reluctantly went to super glue to allow dopping and improved technique not to mention my fingers. My dop sticks stay on over 90% off the time and about 90% snapping off without hurting the cab. I have had two cabs get a divot in the back trying to get the stick off. I've used superglue for about a year. I'm considering trying sodium silicate, because it will soak off, but I'm not sure how long the cabs will stay on even when the glue has dried for a few days. I would also need to make a jig to hold the sticks to the cabs while the glue is drying.

I've only used super glue, all I had available when I started & never tried anything else lol. I think this stick gave me problems because there was so much glue dried on the end it was way off level, so I cut the end off to level it. I think the glue soaked into the wood & didn't get a good bond on the cab.
I agree about chewing up your fingertips. I have much respect for those of you that don't dop!

These are my dop sticks. I can grind of or cut off excess glue.

I use nails & super glue. I used to soak them off in acetone, they would come off after about 3 hours. I bought a little butane torch & now I heat them off in a few seconds. Just heat the nail & the cab will fall off. I then use a razor-scraper to remove the excess glues. I will never go back to wax.

Beautiful sodalite cab and I like the diamond-shape, too, NDK! Did you cab it on your cool homegrown cabber? If you did, have you made any changes or adjustments to your machine? broseph82, do you cab without dops wearing gloves?

I actually ground down my nails and finger tips WITH dops believe it or not. My wife says I have "Shrek paws". Go figure. I wear gloves cause I don't want my hands being wet
