James,,,,Welding, brazing and soldering are almost the same thing. Welding is much hotter and the "filler rod" is usually the same material as the pieces being welded together. Brazing and soldering are done at a much lower temp and the filler rod is usually a different material then the pieces being brazed/soldered together.
In welding the 2 pieces being joined and the filler rod must "melt" together. In brazing and soldering the filler rod melts at a lower temp then the pieces being joined together,,,,kinds like hot glue. I'm SURE that if I could be with you,you would get it in a hurry! connrock

Hah, I can weld two pieces of grease together. Okay, that is a lie but you probably saw that right off. I spent a big portion of my life welding and soldering. Mig, tig, stick and gas. I consider it an art form because there are a lot more people out there that think they are welders than there are welders. I mastered it but I have met a lot of guys that are better than me. The only thing I would be interested in now is tig welding because I can weld almost anything with it, it is very clean and there are no sparks flying around burning me. (had enough of that to last two life times) The only draw back is on anything large or even medium large it is pretty slow. The great thing about it is the ability to weld two pieces of metal together without filler rod. I have worked mostly with aluminum and stainless but would like to try some copper, steel and brass work. talkingstones I love that first piece and the stone in it is awesome also. Gotta give ya a "you go girl" on that one and I have no doubt that there will be a lot more. Jim

connrock @wampidy Solder of most any type whips me. Arc type welds no problem. LOL. Hats off to you both, and talkingstones too. Did I mention arc welding myself into a cage ?

Yes jamesp , philosophically, I'm seeing that you have. Sometimes, the biggest things that cage us in are all within our minds, preventing us from trying the things we want to try and becoming who we want to be. Interesting phenomenon! Almost had me beat before I even started with soldering. It was a decision to learn this and to continue learning it. One that I'm really glad to have made but it hasn't been easy. Conrock can attest to that!!!! LOL!!! Cages come in many forms...

Hey James, one more thought here before I go get ready for work. There's a huge difference between "Can't," "Won't," and "I'm just not that into it." All are equally valid things. It's figuring out where you are on that scale that opens the cage.

There has been a bunch on this forum that have been challenged by soldering. Their challenges seem to be similar. I did chalk it off as a fairly high skill operation. Too be attacked-one day. Meantime, using alternate methods. I have no excuses Cathy, I do use oxy acetylene regular for cutting. All I need is a jeweler's torch head and make my move.
Torch could be reached from cage, making escape possible:).

Do what you are good at is another option and I think you are doing a damn good job of it. You might spend a bunch of time learning to solder and still prefer the arc.
I hated to change over from stick to wire because 7018 can be laid in so so damn nice but I finally got over it. I think stick is going to be a lost art sometime in the future but there is no way you can crank the heat up to the top with wire and burn a hole in 1/4" deck plate under water so the water will drain out. Can not do it with a torch either. Jim

jamesp,,,, This guy(George Goehl) uses a pretty good size oxy/acet torch and does some pretty intricate work with it. I've learned a LOT watching his free videos and have also bought a few of his "pay videos" for $5.00 each. This video is a good one for learning a bit about brazing with a fairly good size oxy/acet torch,,, linkThis is a complete list of all of his free videos,,,, linkconnrock

It takes very little to keep a group of welders amused, says the electrician? *ducks for cover*

It takes very little to keep a group of welders amused, says the electrician? *ducks for cover* Electrical vs mechanical, mechanical vs electrical- love hate/hate love. Since the beginning. Poor electricians are usually out numbered. Unfortunately, the mechanical stuff won't run if the electricians don't bring the power. So a resented dominate position. Electricians are smarty britches.

Hey James, what you say is so true, there always has and will be a friendly rivalry between mechs and elecs. Spent many years in industrial maintenance and its a kind of symbiotic relationship isn't it? BTW one of my best friends is a welder?
