Well.. This marks two weekends in a row I've tackled rock hounding trips. At the last minute I convinced my ultra-patient fiancé that a trip to Coalinga and Area 54 would be just lovely mid August. Ha! We made it to Jacalito Creek and checked out some of the creek bed. We didn't go far, as I wasnt feeling comfortable combing the creek bed near homes. We came away with some treasures, but the heat got to me rather quickly. Area 54 was an interesting space. The orchards on either side were sweeping, and we stayed well out of their way. We parked and walked a few spots, picking up interesting rocks a long the way. Being a total noob at this, I'm fairly certain we overlooked some treasures. I was hoping poppy jasper would scream out to me to take him home... But that just didn't happen. I really thought I read something about this area crawling with poppy jasper, was that too long ago? Or is this just an issue of an untrained eye? I'll post some photos of our finds soon.

The first photo is some items taken from Area 54. If anyone wants to take a shot at what they are I'd appreciate it! I really just picked up what I thought was pretty. Of course our lack of rain made it a dusty and dirty adventure, so these guys are now much pretty with a little cleaning. I especially like the greenish rock with purplish zebra stripes. It's such a cool color combo! These smaller ones we found near Coalinga in Jacalito a creek. Again, not sure what we grabbed! If anyone wants to help a girl out, that would be great!

I'd eventually like to cab some pieces and learn jewlery making methods. Maybe tumble some of the smaller pieces if I can. For now the thrill of the hunt and excitement of learning is what I'm enjoying!

Nice collecting! There is a lot of Poppy Jasper at A54. Mostly orange or reddish. I've had the best luck in the far back right hills and creek bed. Here's a pic of the orange with micro quartz poppy eyes and a red with bit of yellow.

Do you mean closer to the house, near to the trees?

Do you mean closer to the house, near to the trees? Yes. Not too close to the house though. The last hill to the right before getting to the field leading to the house. The creek bed below that hill is called boulder drop.(I think)
