I bought these stones and even the vendor wasn't sure which they were. I'm pretty sure the red threads are either Rutile or Tourmaline, but I'm not sure which. The base stone is clear quartz. These are 700x700 images so you can (hopefully) see the threads. If not, I'll take new ones.

Hi, Autumn, those are beautiful quartz points! I'm not sure, but it looks like hematite in your first pic, and hematite with hematite platelets in your second photo. In the 3rd pic, it looks like there's needles at the bottom of the point, and not sure if they are rutile or tourmaline or manganese oxide. The same quartz point looks like it has hematite and hematite platelets. I hope gemfeller sees your post so he may answer your question. www.quartzpage.de/inc_text.htmlHere's a hematoid quartz in my mini gem collection.

Thanks gingerkid! I'll take a look at those threads. Embarrassingly enough, I forgot to consider hematite. I remember a light red powder on my fingers after picking through the crystal points, and I think you're right - it's probably hematite.

I remember a light red powder on my fingers after picking through the crystal points, and I think you're right - it's probably hematite. In quartzite the Chinese had HUGE crystals just like yours. They were clearly man made, synthetic with perhaps hematite, although my first thought was Mercury. They were horrible fakes. The crystals were all askew and not even close to natural looking. When I say HUGE, I mean it. Like 24" long or more. For $100 or so!
