what's the most weight you have ever got in a "frb" ? I know the post office says you can go to 70 #s but think that's impossible ! ( unless it was lead) ------------ 20 #s === lot of paper packing 22# === still have some small empty areas 24-25 ==== have to squeeze the sides when putting tape on ! and today I hit a new record 27 #s & 6 1/2 ozs. ;D ;D ;D --- didn't think they were going to lift it off the counter !! --- and I'm not even 1/2 way to the limit !!

You guys are brutal, I think all the ones I've gotten came in around 12-15 lb not a lot of paper, but some I admit- and I've been glad to get that much.

Snowdog, Seee how many gold bars you can fit in one, and send it my way. I doubt you'd be able to get 4 or 5 in there without going over the limit. I will still take that amount. I think I've gotten close to 25...and that's stuffed full. Steve

I think I've had a 25 pounder but the PO busted it up good when they threw it in my driveway *L*. I don't think they really appreciate the flat raters full of pretty rocks like we all do....Mel

I shipped some rock to myself while on vacation. I did my usual and wrapped it up good with tape. The lady at the post office (a very small town of a few hundred folks) said she wasnt going to send it because it should be able to holds its own without any tape. Its a good thing I wasnt there because I would have told her that she was lucky that I put tape on so that the contents didnt end up all over HER floor. But I wasnt there......my husband just told her that he was told that flat raters can be sent as long as they were under the weight limit. She said she would send it but that there might be an extra shipping fee at the other end? ? Honestly, if they are going to allow up to 70 lbs. then they shouldnt complain if there is tape on the box. Shannon

My sister sent 70 lbs of batteries to her son-in-law in Iraq in a single flat rate box. I wouldn't think they would be that heavy......
I got a flatrate box of rocks that weighed in at 30 lbs yesterday, but it all the appearances of having burst open and repaired by the post office, it also took a week and a half delivery time. The PO must have set it aside for a while.

I sure don't know where anybody got a 70 lb limit, the USPS website says these have a 20lb limit:
"blah blah blah.....-Can be used for Domestic Priority Mail ($8.95) and International Priority Mail ($23 to Canada and Mexico- $37 to all other countries, 20 lb weight limit applies)......blah blah blah......for other pickup options and availability, visit usps.com.
For more information, please visit: The Shipping Center"
maybe its only internationally that the 20lb limit applies?
Still I don't think I'd push my luck too much.

So I guess they aren't keeping me busy enough at work- for fun I ran the numbers to see just how much of what material you could pack in there.
Given the volume of the FRB-1, if you were to fill it with water, it would weigh in at 18.5 lb.
If you cut a solid block of quartz to just fit, you'd have it weighing in just under 50 lb
Filled with SiC (why would anyone do that?) if you could eliminate the space between particles you could get about 57 lb in a flat rate box.
To get it weighing 70 lb you'd need a solid block of Malachite 11"X8.5"X 5.5"
Filled with Iron it would be 145lb,
lead 210 lb
and a flat rate box full of gold, valued today at approximately $3,777,200 US would weigh in at 358 lb.
The flatter FRB-2 is actually a bit larger in volume, 6% to be more precise.

the 20 # limit is for overseas shipping --- the 50 states is 70 # ;D ;D guess I would need about 10 of them if I was going to ship my gold anywhere ---- uuuuh, let's see --- would it be safe if I shipped some to Steve Holmes ? ;D ;D was hoping someone would give some examples !! ;D

Snowdog, I am really, really bad. I have never weighed any of the boxes I have received or the few that I have sent. I do know that on the wonderful days when more than one box has arrived here, neither my PO Delivery lady nor I could carry two at at time. Now I know that it has something to do with mass as well as weight but I have no trouble picking up a 40# sack of dog food for the real Lady BeaBea, but I suspect almost all the boxes I receive weigh well over 20 lbs. Today I took some packages to the PO. The PO Lady and I were jabbering about rocks and when she put the one box on the scale to do the stamp she forgot to indicate it was a domestic FRB. The stamp printed out at $24.95. Perhaps Rallyrocks can figure out how much that box weighed based on the mistaken First Class rate the box would have cost me. It was the 11x8.5x5.5 size. Lucky for me, the rate was changed to the FRB $8.95 as soon as the PO Lady saw her mistake. Lady B

24lbs 9 ozs is my personal best, and I packed er tight, when you shook it, nothing even rattled. I have gotten 13 lbs into a flat rate envelope though, when I used to sell fishing sinkers. I use the flat rate envelopes for slabs quite a bit, they work pretty good for those.
The guy down at the PO always says "here comes another box of rocks" when I bring in a flatrater. But they are pretty cool about it here.....................Tony

I've had a 27 and a 31 lber from Banjo (I told him to "Stuff em Full") Snowdogs come in a very close second with 25 ad 22 lbs- got a couple from Texas also that were in the 22 to 25 lbs range- but the best I;'ve ever sent was like 21 Lbs (I think I pack them way to carefully- lots of padding and wrapping)
