Hi everyone, I want to start off by letting everyone know I don't know that much about rocks or identifying them.. But I wasn't able to find much online about this particular one I picked up the other day. A little about this piece: Greenish exterior, black interior. It is all smoothed out from tumbling in the ocean. I found this piece washed up on the shore of a Eureka, CA beach. The black part is a lot smoother than the green area. It goes all throughout the rock. You can see parts of the black showing through the green on other sides, but the front has the biggest visible chunk.

Lots of green chert from the Franciscan Formation on the beaches up that way. That would be my best guess....Mel

I haven't found whale bone yet..At least I don't think. A few agates, what I believe to be Jasper and possibly a tiny piece of green Jade so far, We've only been here a couple months. Thank you for welcoming me and responding ?

Does the greenish chert from the mid-coast range cab well? I've collected several pounds of it from Panoche, but a quick google search doesn't turn up much.

Does the greenish chert from the mid-coast range cab well? I've collected several pounds of it from Panoche, but a quick google search doesn't turn up much. That depends on hardness. The harder, clearer stuff makes wonderful cabs. Be careful. Some of the green stuff can contain mercury, selenium, lead and other elements that are dangerous and unfriendly to the human condition. In general, the greater the translucency, the harder the sample and safer to handle. As soon as I can get a descent camera I have many examples.
