Still losing fingernail at a steady pace, it seems, even with a dop stick. Cab 6. Same yellow mossy stuff as before. This one looks like a fancy red goldfish to me. Cab 7. Guadalupe jasper. There's a tiny crack on the left side that just noticed. Cab 8. i have no idea what this jasper is, but it sure has pretty autumn colors. Anyone have an ID? The polish on this set isn't as good. I got a little more impatient, and there were a lot more people at the shop. That being said, I'm checking out this tonight and if it looks good probably going to buy it. sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/tls/5201730923.htmlAny tips or questions I should ask before buying a used machine are appreciated! What you would pay for it? My budget's not terribly high - I actually can only spend $600 on everything - including a GFCI, gravity feed water drip, and any replacement parts needed.

That Guadalupe is killer. Too bad about the fracture but thats pretty common for that material.
The motor on that unit is unknown to most of us on here for cabbing. 99 percent of cabbing machines use standard 1/4 or 1/3 horsepower common motors. I guess I would make sure that setup has enough torque and power to not bog down when pressing into the wheels.
The wheels on cabbing machines can be most of the cost so I would be concerned with the quality on those. Just because it says the soft wheels are new does not mean they are top quality. Chinese wheels are about 1/3 the cost of diamond pacific wheels and worth about 1/3 too.
As a newbie I wonder if the variable speed will not be a bad thing to mix in right away? Since most standard machines run great at 1725 rpm how would you really know what speed that machine is really turning?
I bought my 6" genie used on ebay for $650 including shipping and I used it for 10-20 cabs a week for two years before replacing my first wheel. After 3 yrs of heavy use I still have two of the original wheels on it.
The unit itself sure looks built well and you cant go wrong with stainless steel.

Very nice work! I have a nearly OCD-ish thing for Guadalupe Poppy Jasper. Fortunately for my bank account I can't find it much anymore. My dopamine loss may be my wife's gain! Larry C.

Yes I did get it, for $500. His Vietnamese wife was the one bargaining, and since I have a Vietnamese mom I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to bargain much lower without an hour of effort. I might call it a Sprite, since it's not exactly a Pixie but pixie-sized. The arbor and tray are solid, well built, with little wear. It's very pleasing to hold. The motor is a 90V Robbins & Myers, that goes up to 2450 rpm. Couldn't find info on the P/N, so I'm guessing it's old. I'll want to put in a bit of work this weekend - drill some holes for some sort of gravity feed fresh water system and drain, and add some dampeners to the motor mount because it's pretty loud. My friend suggested rigging up a tachometer to an LED display to show the actual rpm...but he's a mechanical engineer and I'm not, ha. He didn't know how old the hard wheels are, but I do see diamond winking in them so they aren't totally stripped. The soft wheels are unused, newly RESURFACED Johnson Brothers wheels. My understanding is that they are Chinese made, and being resurfaced probably aren't worth a whole lot? I'm a little worried that I overpaid there. I'm also not sure how to break them in.

Quailriver, I got the guadalupe as a small ~ 1.5" x 2" slabette at a club sale for just a couple bucks. I believe they have a couple more pieces from the same rock - would you like me to grab them for you the next time I'm at the club house?

Yay!!! Congrats!
I wouldn't discount those wheels too quickly. A lot of people really like the resurfaced wheels.

Sure if they are still available next time you're down there. If so just drop me an email to QuailRiver@Northstate.net and let me know what I owe you for them. Larry C.
