Was at a conference and trade show last week for work and ran across this beast. Had to share, $1700 price tag

Think I'll stick to my drill press. However, your beast would be helpful out in the wild. Wouldn't you still need a water source!

Those core drills are made mainly for field geologists who need cores for a variety of reasons. I've seen films of them being used and if IIRC they didn't use water.

I said "if I recall correctly." Apparently I didn't. It must be exhausting to back-pack all that water into the wilderness.

That's what grad students are for, lol. A simple backpack weed sprayer does the job, the drill pretty quick. And there's tons of good rock right next to roads to work on. Seems like a homemade version could be knocked up for a lot less than 1,700. With feather and wedges you'd have a sweet little boulder-buster!

IIRC It requires a claim to use motorized equipment. Thanks gemfeller for the acronym!

not that it couldn't be used by a geologist but I think those were designed for coring concrete. Back in the 80's when I was working for an exploration company we had a gas powered core drill called a Winkie they also had a rotary percussion drill you didn't have to use water with it. I think that unless the land is designated as no motorised equipment as long as just using it for surface samples you could probably get away with it and as long as you aren't using any water additives.

would hate to be holding on to that when the core bit binds up in the rock.
