Hello All, My name is Jake and I am from eastern Ohio. I am a science teacher and I found this site while looking for resources that my students could use for a rock identification project I was doing in my class. I started looking at all the pictures and equipment, and it got me thinking this might be a cool hobby. I live close to the Ohio River, so there are all kinds of potential to hunt my own rocks. For Christmas my wife got me a Lortone 45C tumbler, some grit, and a couple 5lb bags of mixed rock from the Rock Shed. I was telling her how I thought it would be a good demonstration for my classroom when discussing destructive processes in my earth science class. She must have picked up on my hints . I got a batch tumbling now so we will see how this turns out. I look forward to reading through the boards and getting whatever info I can. Jake

There is indeed a rich source of lapidary info here on RTH and some great folks that share it. It sounds like your wife caught on quick to your new found hobby! Fantastic!!! Personally, I live in the land of muck and mud (lots of both right now!!!) so I have to drive a way to hunt rocks...it sounds like you're in a good area to do some rockhounding. So get out there and find some homegrown rocks!!! Be very, very careful, though...this can be addicting. I don't have an addiction problem, but it happens to some people.

There is great information on this board It sounds like you already have a great start with a good tumbler and rockshed rough I'm not sure where exactly in eastern ohio you are but flint ridge is probably not too far from you and has great material for collecting /tumbling Good luck with your 1st tumble Post some pics when you finish- we all like pictures Have a great New yrs and Go Bucs!!!

Thanks for the welcome all! cardiobill, I live about an hour east of the Flint Ridge area, right down I-70. I am planning to make a trip there this spring. I have been looking at info on Nether's Farm and it seems like a very reasonable price and not too difficult to access. Now I just need to decide whether my jeep will have enough space or if I need to take my truck . Have you ever been there? Any tips or info? Thanks, Jake

osuguy0301Welcome from north Idaho. Great hobby, great forum. I like your idea about using rock tumbling as an educational aid. As cardiobill said, post some pictures of your tumbles.
