Did this one up to a 1000 and then tumbled it. Is that cheating?

That is a great looking cab and tumbling is not cheating at all it is just utilizing all of your tools to achieve the best result. I had a single cab in my loto batch this week that I had completely cabbed all the way to 14,000 and still thought the vibe could improve it so I tossed it in on day two of my 500 stage.

We do some cabs that way but mostly just Elizabeth's thin slab agate earrings. Ours are 10 lb vibe units so getting a batch together can take awhile.

Rockoonz if you get enough filler you can run them whenever you want. I was doing this the last time I was vibing - keeping the vibe full of ceramic and stone bits and could drop in as little as a single rock if I wanted (I'd usually make sure I had 3-4 pounds at minimum though)

bushmanbilly I'm thinking of using the vibe for all my real solid cabs because of what Chuck Drummond Island Rocks said - I don't have a good way to get the backs polished and if I vibed them I could. And I 100% agree - whatever you can do/use to get the result you want is fair game.

Great cab! Not cheating. I use to joke that it was, but I really don't think it is. Drummond Island Rocks So, did throwing that cab in the vibe after 14k improve the polish enough so as you would notice?

Drummond Island Rocks So, did throwing that cab in the vibe after 14k improve the polish enough so as you would notice? As close as the eye can tell that one really came out about the same both ways. I sometimes still question my ability to achieve the best polish on the wheels but I am always confident that the agates and jaspers coming out of the vibe tumbler are as shiny as possible. Using high quality sub micron A/O in the vibe is equivalent to 100,000 grit on day one and breaks down even further on day two. Chuck

If you're using a vibe to eliminate the tedious steps of fine grits & polish, why go all the way to 1000 on the wheels? I shape the cabs on my 60 grit, then 220 wheel & then into the tumbler at 220 through the rest of the usual tumbling grits. Lynn

That is a really nice stone. I rough grind my cab shapes using a 60 or 80 flat lap and then finish in the vibe. My UV-18 vibe gives a great finish on both the front and back plus allows multiple cabs to be done in one batch in less time. My vibe did so well on the first run that I refinished all of my practice stones from my cabbing sessions. I wish that we could have a cab(s) of the month picture gallery where only the finished product is shown and no prize is awarded for those of us that use mixed methods to produce our cabs and don't want to take time for the photography.

Well, if you literally take the definition of hand made object, that says the object must be hand held against the tool or the tool must be hand held against the object, there might be a slight problem. But once you say it and not claim it's fully hand made, it's not cheating at all. Besides, you brought this cab to its final shape and smoothed it by hand. And it came out really beautiful!

That's a stunning Owyhee, bushmanbilly! No, I don't think it's cheating. But, I'm wondering if it should be called a tumbled cab? When I first started cabbing, Mr. Daryl Blair of Blairrock, kindly sent me a lot of beautiful tumbled cab pendants that he shaped with his saw and then completed using his tumblers. I like Drummond Island Rocks's method of adding the girdle and bevel after tumbling his cabs for his groovy grove wraps.

I like Drummond Island Rocks's method of adding the girdle and bevel after tumbling his cabs for his groovy grove wraps. Here is my opinion on that one. A properly domed tumbled cab that does not have a radius on both edges of the girdle does not need to be listed as a tumbled cab. This cab is tumbled then had the girdle cleaned up. A cab that is flat on front and back or domed but very rounded over on the edges should be listed as a tumbled cab. My groove wraps are a different animal. I actually like the slightly rounded over edge on those but on those the groove is already in and I know I wont be selling them to a wire wrapper or bezel setter that could get upset over the rounded edge. Maybe I could list them as "hybrid" cabs and say a cabbing machine and vibrating tumbler were used in combination to achieve the best possible shine. Sounds like a good sales pitch. Chuck

Chuck Hybrid cabs sounds like an excellent marketing name. Thank you, and I appreciate your explanation, Drummond Island Rocks. Edited to remove photo.
