I got my used Lot-O up and running. So far I did a 2-day run to knock the edge off of a mix of small and large ceramic media. Yesterday I put in a small load of rocks with the ceramic media making up the rest of the load. I would say *maybe* half the load was rock. Well, with the first load of ceramics-only and now this load of rocks/media the Lot-O is fairly loud. I've read where folks talk about "just a hum" noise levels....but then I read others talking about motors wearing out and the Lot-O motors getting noisier. I was doing some searching and ran across a thread in which connrock stated the following: "Jugglerguy,,,A light load will make the unit sound a lot different then if it's loaded properly. This can happen when using a lot of ceramic media as the media doesn't weight the same as that amount of small rocks does. connrock "

I figure that a light load is part of the problem, but still...it sounds loud. If anybody wants to listen to it here is a video I posted the other day...ceramics-only. The current load with rocks I think sounds very similar. Feedback is always appreciated. Thanks! Ed

It's hard to tell from a video, but that sounds pretty normal. It's much quieter with the lid on.

And after thinking about it, it is (some) quieter with the lid on. I might get another video later today with the lid on and talk some to give some type of base sound level....southern drawl and all.

Ok, I put another video up of me talking and the Lot-O running...I'd say it's loud, but not as loud as the Money Pit is.

That does seem pretty loud. Hard to tell from a video though.

Thanks for the feedback, Rob. It is also in a possible acoustically enhancing(?) location. It is sitting in the corner of a large cement block room with ceilings probably 14' tall. All hard, mortar (of some kind) surfaces and a nailed shut wooden door immediately to the side of it (drumhead effect?). Think old 1940-1950 gas station construction. It does have a "pulse" noise to it, though, it's not a steady hum, but that may be the way it's supposed to sound. It's not overwhelming but definitely a notable noise in the room.

Mine is in the basement, so my concern is whether I can hear it upstairs. I don't notice my small 3 lb tumblers. I can definitely hear my larger 6 lb. tumbler. What I hear is the thump of the rocks in the barrel, not the motor. The Lot-O is a steady noise. I think I can hear it slightly upstairs, but because it's a steady noise, rather than a thumping noise, it isn't as noticeable. I can hear the Lot-O when I'm in the same room very well.

It's at my shop, but in the office area. Customers might not like the noise, or there again they might. I'll probably end up moving it and the Money Pit to a secluded room in the back where Big Brother can't find them. Kidding aside, once I get things ironed out I've got a room that might be just the ticket for them.

Like juglerguy said,,,,it's hard to tell from either video but it does sound normal to me. A couple things can make the unit make noise,,,, Loose or broken springs or generally loose frame bolts. The counter balances on the fan wheels,,,,if they are not lined up the unit will vibrate incorrectly. Loose "mounting" to the "base" will also cause noise. Sometimes even the amount of water in any given load will make a difference in noise. I noticed you have a hole in the lid. That will cause the load to dry out prematurely.I had 2 Lot-O's and never had a gas problem so I never had a hole in any of my lids. I DID have a problem with the lids coming off(due to normal vibration) so this is what I came up with,,,, Good luck and have fun,,, connrock

Thanks connrock!!! This tumble will be coming out of polish this evening. Once I'm through cleaning up I'm going to check over the nuts and bolts and be sure everything is snug. I think the dowel has been moved at one time but I think it is now in the original factory position. The lids had holes in them when I got the tumbler, it was a used one. It seems the 500 and 1000 stages dried out the quickest on me. The 500 seemed to produce as much slurry as the 220 did. The polish stage has stayed the wettest and action has been really good. I secure the lids using one of those large ring-binders like is used to hold large stacks of paper. I loop two rubber bands around the metal ring and slide this over the lid (fits perfect) and then just hook the rubber bands on the rubber knob on the bottom of the barrel. Seems to work pretty good...it was a spur-of-the-moment MacGyver fix. Thanks again for the feedback...trust me, I need all the guidance that I can get!!!

As for the noise, I think I've gotten used to it...I'm trying to tell when something is "different" by the sound.

I will start by saying...it's not fair. I have all my rock tumbler and vib in my room. Could be crazy but not for me. I have a Cochlear implant and when I remove it at night, well... I hear nothing. Also, if I put the rock equipment in the garage it freezes. In the room is the best for. You take the worst thing you have and make the best of it.
