Hello, I found some agates in my backyard, Ohio. Size is about 2x4. What is the best way to make them look good? Tumble, cut, lap, whatever works. They look like: Grey with a white line going through the middle, one dark red, burnt orange, one very dark blue some others but they all are close to the same colors.

Hi spiceman and welcome to the forum. That's a tough call without seeing them. If they aren't full of crevices and vugs, tumbling would probably shape and shine them up nicely. Some pieces are best left whole as display pieces and then there are those that lend themselves to being cut in half and the faces polished. Post some pictures of them if you can. Guess it depends on the rock and whatcha have to work with as far as lapidary machines.

Pictures will get you more accurate advice. Are you sure what you have is Agate? Flint is much more common in Ohio and comes in all the colors you described. Ohio Flint. This picture is the really colorful stuff but whites, grays and tans are very common. Chuck
