Hi to all,
New guy here. My wife and I have collected rocks for years, and always wanting to learn lapidary but never seemed to be the right time. Well in 2016 we are going to learn. Wife is starting to do wire wrapping of stones and I am studying ways to economically start slabbing.
Wanting to pick your collective brains. Thanks for being such a rich resource on the subject.

I grew up on a tractor seat in central Illinois (between Champaign and Springfield) and can testify that the only rocks were the glacial erratics that frost heaving forced to the surface of the fields after their long drag from the north in the Pleistocene. But that resulted in a great variety of stuff to be gleaned from gravel pits, farmers' fence rows and a few river shallows. Now you can buy things from all over the world, or beg a few samples from compatriots on the internet. Welcome and by all means post up some photos of the rocks you are working with. Tom (now of New Mexico).
