I seem to have run into some problems with my bench grinder. Maybe it got a little warm; hot even. It appears to have melted the gear wheel! So I looked into a replacement and was encouraged to find one on the website. Discouraged then, to find that of all the spares they have, they've run out of this one. Of course, because it's made of an unsuitable material! It is also discontinued and they have no further advice. Hmm. So whatever I do I'm hoping to remove the current one so that I can identify the pattern from the good section. I have the cover off, but the gear wheel is fast with a pin. Can anyone advise how to remove that pin? I appreciate this is probably mechanics 101, but you've got to start somewhere!

metalsmith that is a spring roll pin that has to be driven through the shaft. You will need a drift, about the diameter of the hole, with a flat face on the driving end. Sometimes it takes some force to start I to move but after that it should drive out easy. Good Luck........................MrP

Drift, as MrP mentioned. Perfect for pushing a spring roll pin out. Drift just slightly smaller than hole. Makes easy removal. The ones with round but flat ends roll pin to be pushed out

Update.
I tried a selection of old drill-bits, but they werent' the right size. A sawn-off tent peg fitted.
The spring roll pin was sticking out of the far side of the gear cog, but was kept partially in by the box. I tried to rotate it around, but it snagged in the worm-screw. I managed to coax it back in a bit (hammered at an angle) and navigated the spring-roll pin through the worm-screw channel. Then the pin was face-front but would not pull out. I rolled it right around to the back again and drilled a small hole just big enough for the spring-roll; lined it up then pop! It's out and the gear cog is free.
My dad has a friend who is a toolmaker, retired, who may have a go at it; otherwise I might carve one in fine-grained wood and sand-cast it in brass.

It didn't "melt" the gear, the gear wore out over time. Look into an industrial supplier that handles Boston Gear products, best-easiest fix is replacement of both gears if cost justifiable.

Thanks for the lead. I'll look into something similar this side of the pond. I don't have the gear wheel to hand, but whilst it is definately worn - there is some fraying on all the teeth - there is one area that seems to have failed markedly (its not visible in the pic); here, the teeth are flattened, but appear to have flowed. My best guess is that the worm was hot and that on finishing working, this portion of the gear wheel was locally heated and suffered the consequences.

The dremel is likely the brushes. You should be able to get them online and it's a one minute fix
