Hello, I found this rock hounding by a spring about 3 foot deep, OHIO land. I cut the end off and polished it by hand, the black one. The greenish, blueish rock is the same rock but the other side from the cut. A file skids across with no marks. I thought about breaking it but thought about asking first. Do you know what I might be? Or what testing should I do? I have a guess but a guess is all it is. Any ideas? Please

Looks like a black chert spice. Try taping the very edge of the cut and see if it breaks like glass(conchoidal fracture). If it rings or 'tinks' when tapped with a hammer lightly then you are about sure it is chert.

Could also be a basalt.

I don't think it's chert/flint. Fracture and color aren't right.
It looks exactly like basalt river cobble to me, which makes sense. Ohio's bedrock is sedimentary, but this looks igneous. So I think it's an erratic, probably brought south during the last ice age.
