A friend sent me this from Alaska, the note said shale. My question before I try something... What is the best way to display it. Polish Tumble Slab Or whatever I just want to make look better, if I can or leave it alone?n.

I would at least flat lap the face to polish the face.

Watch out along any cracks it may start leaking oil. That would be a mess. Bennett

Is it oil shale? Lots of kinds of "shale" depending on location.

Yes, it's from Alaska and the guy is in charge of the drilling or whatever it is.

I think I would save it as a specimen then.

Just a update, no pics because it looks the same. I lapped it by hand, with sandpaper. It smelled, the lapping caused a brown smelly puddle of ...Nast stuff and it looks the same but now it's flat. I will keep it just like that, a good specimen. Good idea.
