Nope, the referee is just making sure the two big boys are occupied, then he's going to go visit ALL of the hens!

LOL! Couple of Jakes as we call young toms. Fun as heck to watch and a good source of hysterical laughter at their antics :-) As they mature, the dueling gets serious and can even lead to death for the looser. Take a look at the spurs on the big tom I killed yesterday He has been in many a fight and no doubt was the victor in most of them. They still measured an inch long, but would normally be needle sharp on the tips. As they mature, the spurs start turning upwards and are then called "Hooks" by turkey hunters. When they get an inch long or better, hunters often hang their trophy on a limb by the "hooks" to show they harvested a mature tom. Mine was a "Limbhanger" :-)

*LOL* I have had a fine experience with wild turkey spurs. Made the mistake of doing a "chicken dance" in front of a tom one day while out hiking. Rascal first jumped me from behind beating me about the head and narrowing missing the back of my neck with his spurs, then kicked me in the nads hard enough to bend me over, and then spurred me through my jeans into my shin almost bone deep. Needless to say, I've learned not to tease a big tom on his booming grounds *L*....Mel

great photos, i've never witnessed this behavior, though we do have flocks of turkeys around.
