I am starting a new post from my phone and am interested to see if it will work! I feel pretty blessed to live in Central Montana, with regard to fossils, agate and of course, fossil wood! This last summer opened up some new interest in fossils as my job had me in the hills and on the rivers and one side Benny was scooping up fossils left and right! I didn't make any extraordinary finds, but I'm hoping to change that this summer! I'm now going to insert a pic of my first ammonite find just to see if it works.

So I was in an area that had calcite crystals just outcropping all over and as I poked around trying to find cool ones, I started finding shell fragments. Then I started finding rock matrices just full of shells. At some point I sloughed a big rock apart and this guy was in the middle. Not a great specimen. I didn't realize they were fairly common though, so I was absolutely pumped when I found it! These are some of the other mollusks I found in the area.

Thanks Gunner. Things got a little hectic and the Internet had to be sacrificed for a bit! As the summer went on we found more and more... Kind of a cool story... We were driving a road in some hills outside of Mosby, MT. A couple hundred yards off the road is this big rock, like a granite Boulder. Not huge, maybe a 250# rock. But... It's the only one... For miles! I decide to go take a look, knowing it's probably a glacier erratic, but it just drew me to it. As I get 10 yards from it I look down and start seeing mother of pearl and baculite fragments! Jack pot! The fossil outcrop had nothing to do with the erratic, but the erratic called me out! Turned out to be the best spot of the summer, and I'll be back there soon! Found this guy there: Not sure what to do with it, but I think it will clean up nicely!!

Is there a trick to splitting the sed layers in the rock to find fossils, or is it just blind luck?

Ernie, looks like you hit the honey hole in that area.... Your not to far from my hounding area either-LOL... That 1st fossil of the Ammonite-it's a rare ammie!!!! (Hard to find)... The other Ammonite you have is cool too...If you want to get a good species from it,you can knock the outter layer off and expose the smaller Ammonite inside, which will make it more complete... Liking the baculites too...........

The trick is to fracture the outer layer, without damaging the inner Ammonite....Striking outward away from the Ammonite,so the shock waves go the direction of the blow... Can you see the inner Ammonite, just a bit smaller?

I also see that you have a fossil that looks like "devils toenail" Oyster,or a Nautilus....Can you get a better photo or photos of it? If it's a Nautilus, you are looking at the outer exterior of a beautiful interior fossil...A bit of work to remove the exterior, but well worth it! The inner fossil of the Nautilus......

Remember also, you can go by color in the two formations in that area... The redder the color the more your in the Hell Creek Formation,no fossils worth looking for.... The darker formation, with the shale is the hot spot for most fossils, that puts you in the Bearpaw Formation... The Bearpaw is higher up in formation, that Hell Creek....

Is there a trick to splitting the sed layers in the rock to find fossils, or is it just blind luck? The shale in that area-"Beartooth Formation" is very loose soil,no spitting anything, just walk and find the fossils laying on the ground or look for outcrops, dig and find fossils galore...

You ever find any bone Fossil? My last hunt in the Melstone area,we (my son and I),found Dino bone....That's one of the main reasons for hounding this fall in the same area....They were smaller pieces, nothing whole, but still a great score and a good feeling to know that we can find Dino bone there.... I posted the finds on here, but will have to review the past posts from two years ago...LOL Yes sir,Mosby road area...Thumbs up - High bank hound, the Musselshell River too,you will be surprised what falls into the river from erosion..(wink)
