Anyone want to share good hiking and hounding places in Northern Colorado which would be good for a slow dad and a quick ten-year old son? Anything good up the Thompson or Poudre rivers? We try to get out at least once a week, but we've never found anything too interesting.
Gracias.

Hi napoleonrags and welcome to RTH Hiking, check out Red Mountain and Soapstone Prairie north of Fort Collins on the way to Laramie. There is a new Bison herd up on Soapstone and the views at Red Mountain are amazing, very different than anywhere I know of in Colorado. Also, hike Horsetooth Mountain west of Fort Collins, and hike in Lory State Park nearby. Hounding, you can meander around Pawnee National Grasslands east of town and find Colorado chalcedony/agate, epidosite, petrified wood and of course quartz. Most of my hounding in Colorado is on private claims, which is a great reason to join local rock clubs, as they often get access to claims or have their own claims. Mile Hi Rams (Rock And Mineral Society) out of Denver has some awesome claims up near Lake George, I am a member there, the Fort Collins Rockhounding Club and the Weld County Rock and Mineral Society. Most of my "free range" hounding is saved for Wyoming. Far fewer people, lots more open ground to wander. I like to drive to the southwest side of the state and wander around the desert out there personally. The Gem Trails of Colorado book and Rockhounding Colorado book are great resources if you plan on driving somewhere specific. Good luck!

Thanks herchenx. I've read many of your excellent posts. I've walked around the Pawnee Grasslands a few times. The problem is the best places to hike around the Buttes are not good for hounding. I'll look into joining a rock club. Thanks again for your response, Colin.

napoleonrags I've never been to the Buttes. I just go to the grasslands near the shooting range and wander around. There are decent 2-track roads there, and you can wander the roads, then off the roads where it is flat. I was going when I had a bad knee and could just take my time and found lots of interesting stuff. The Fort Collins club is taking a trip to Wyoming on June 18-19 (overnight, camping) if you want you can find membership info here: www.fortcollinsrockhounds.org/membershipInfo.shtml

Thanks herchenx. I'll look into that. Where in wide wide world of Wyoming are you going? Closer would be better: I coach swimming and have a 7 am practice on Sat. Colin

napoleonrags yeah we will be ~3 hours from Ft. Collins and will be leaving early Saturday. I'll probably not spend the night so I can be home for Father's day. As to where, it is an area we call "Shirley Basin" but you can find it by tracing 287 NW from Laramie, then north on Marshall Road to Sheep Creek Road. That is sort of the center of a circle we spend our time in.

Be sure to go to Buena Vista during the show in August. Not "hounding" but plenty of good rough there from all over. "Quartzsite of the Rockies".

OK that didn't work. I was trying herchenx dropbox method. About ten years ago I tried using photobucket, but I was a bit flummoxed with the entire operation. And it looks like I still am... UPDATE. maybe I figured it out. The Grasslands are awesome.

I find that this website helps me with just about all I need to know about Colorado www.peaktopeak.com/colorado/index.phpIncludes map with three way searchable database, county by county, by mineral, by region. Really a sweet resource.

Thanks for the source. I'm certainly going to use it planning adventures with my son.
Do you play guitar, Ziggy?

David Bowie's classic "Ziggy Stardust" ends with "...and Ziggy played guitar." Wonderful tune. And, thank you for the resource. Colin

OK I see now. I am not the Ziggy that Mr.Bowie (RIP) was singing about. I got the nickname Ziggy because my last name is hard to pronounce and starts with the letter Z. Where I worked the people gave up on my last name and nicknamed me Ziggy. Been that ever since.
