I moved recently and haven't tumbled for a while. My tumbler is still full of rocks and grit and seems to be a good consistency, but I forgot what grit I was on. Are there any methods to find out? I am sure it is not course or polish, that's all I can tell. Thanks for any help.

Run what you have in the tumbler for a while to see if it improves the finish, if so move on to what you used to run second after coarse. If the finish doesn't improve, run what you used to right after coarse, that will get you back on the right track.

That makes sense. Thanks! I hate to set up an a run that might be wasted, but I guess there's no way around it.

You must still be fairly young. We have to write the stage on a piece of painters tape stuck to the lid to be able to remember.

Hey, I was just thinking today that I'll have to start doing that! I just bought a new tumbler with 2 barrels so I am going to have to do something to keep track. I might even start writing down what rocks I am tumbling. Well, it's all jasper for a while, but after that I will try to be more organized.

I use multiple barrels, which are all labell d by stage using a bright yellow paint pen. At the polish stage I write the barrel # & grit & date started. Have fun!

I have been keeping a journal for my rock tumbler with information like what kind of rocks are in the barrel, what time and date it was started, how much grit was put in, how much water, media… I find it has been helpful in my learning process though I seem to be a slow learner. I have been doing this since February and still no shiny rocks. I do think I am starting to make progress and definitely think keeping the journal (as well as reading the posts on this forum) are keys to my improvement.

I had a sudden memory flash and recalled that since I used just rocks in coarse, ceramic media in the medium, and plastic pellets in pre-polish and polish, I had to be in pre-polish. Thanks for all your tips in the tutorial, Shelbeeray! I am trying to incorporate many of them or doing something similar. I am color coding everything with different colors of tape for different grits: tumbling barrels, washing buckets, etc. so I do not have to be so careful about washing everything.
