I finally got around to taking a few pictures of some of the sunstones I found in Oregon. My friend and I just went to the free area near Plush and spent a few days wandering around and then digging a little. We found lots of yellow/clear ones while just walking around the area. We even got some with shiller. Most of the ones with any color were found after a lot of hard digging and breaking rocks. I soaked them in Iron Out to clean them up (some are still soaking). Here are just a few I picked out of the batch when I saw shiller in them. Don't know what I'm going to do with them but they are really cool. I thought about tumbling them but I don't have any grit right now plus I only have a 1 lb vibe tumbler that I use for jewelry. I have a lot more and some bigger stones but haven't gotten pictures of them. better view of some shiller The collecting area (not much to see) The road into the area from Plush is anything but plush. It was really rough and I even got a flat tire on my trailer from it. Now I know why there were so many "dead" tires by the roadside there. This is one of the many roads that wind through the public collecting area: I didn't take a lot of pictures there, not much to see plus I was too busy looking down for the stones. It was really fun and I want to go back again sometime. Thanks to the BLM for having a free area for camping and collecting. I hope they continue to have it open.

We went to the free area outside Plush on our trip to Oregon a few years ago. We found a lot of small yellow ones, no schiller though and no red - nice work!

How do you dig them sunstones? With shovel? We used shovels, rock hammer, pick and pry bars basically. The stones are trapped in the layers of rock or even within the rocks themselves so sometimes it pays to crack open the rocks you get out of the hole and search through the rubble for stones.

I wish I live close to Oregon, too bad no sunstones anywhere else... Wish I lived closer too but I would probably spend way too much time there. There are sunstones in other places but I'm not sure where. I know the have them in Idaho but they aren't as nice or colorful.
