The last time I visited the U.P. in Michigan was at least 20 years ago. Back then all I had to work with was your typical Michigan Road atlas. Needless to say I missed a ton of places to hound. Now, with the internet, I have been planning a return trip there armed with tons of info and places to hunt. I can't wait. We plan on staying in Mohawk Mi. at a little motel called the White House Motel. It actually has good reviews on Trip Adviser. Right out behind the motel is a huge tailings pile from the Mohawk Mine which I plan on metal detecting for native copper and visually looking for minerals. Our first beach visit will be a drive from Mohawk to Copper Harbor where I found another place called "Agate Beach". Black circle is our starting point in Mohawk and red circle is Agate Beach. A close up of the area. There looks like thousands of feet of beachfront and the rocks are different there. Hubby and I are going to be searching this beach closely for agate. From there we plan on going down route 26 from Agate Beach (circled in black) to a pull over (circled in red) with similar rocks as the ones on Agate Beach. The pullover is covered in snow in the google shot. The access to the beach from the pull over. We hope to make it to Gratiot River if we are lucky in the same day. Overhead view of Gratiot. Rock on the beach at Gratiot. This thread is still a work in progress. I will be listing more stops as time permits.

I didn't realize that there were two Agate Beaches in that area. I went to the one near Toivola last year. I don't think that I've been to the Agate Beach that you're planning to go to. When you're driving along 26, don't miss Brockway Mountain Drive or the Jam Pot.

When you're driving along 26, don't miss Brockway Mountain Drive or the Jam Pot. We did the Brockway Mountain thing 20 years ago. Might just drive it again, I don't know. I think the proper name of this second agate beach is Hunter's Point Park. There is a trail that goes east from the beach towards the harbor with even more places to check than just the main beach. We will be taking that trail to check the less collected spots. From what I read about that beach it is not a high traffic place so it might be lightly picked. I read about the Jam Pot and although it sounds delicious, there are no rocks to be found there so we'll probably skip that one . We are on a three day schedule up there and I plan on hounding more than tourist-ing. I missed most of the good places last time we were up there because that time we were doing the tourist thing. I found probably twenty places to go hounding (not counting the mines) and with so little time, we aren't going to be doing much eating other than at mealtime which at our age is once or twice a day at most. I plan on doing maybe three more entries on this thread which will cover about one quarter of the places we are trying to get to, including the three spots I've already mentioned. We still plan on stopping at the agate beach by Toivola to give it a good once over.

We plan on checking out Calumet Waterworks Park. Below is some dude we don't know standing on the beach at Calumet Waterworks Park Looks like maybe a place to hound a little. After that we will head down the road to McLain State Park. Circled in black below, our base in Mohawk, in red, the Waterworks Park and in yellow McLain S.P. Like I said, we still plan on going to the other agate beach (Stanton Park) as well.
