I was watching the history channel tonight and they had a film on " Saws" -- mainly rock saws --- showed one at a rock quarry that could cut 15 ft. deep ( belted diamond blade) -- the arm looked like a giant chain saw -- the arm was hollow and water was pumped thu it and the chain/belt was $200 a foot and was @ 43 ft long = $8600 for blade ---( of course it was auto -feed too! )-- it would cut for 350 hours before needing reworked ( that was cutting limestone ) ---- then they went to some of the rock companies where they showed several other types cutting --------- Tony --- we need one of these companies to cut our bigger stones ! ;D --- they had some "gang" saws that were cutting about ten slabs all at once ! ---- would make short work of that little pile of rocks in Deming ! ;D ;D

OH, that gang saw sounds like a lotsa fun!! But, can you imagine the wrecks possible with that many things able to go wrong? I just lost a 30" blade last week, can't imagine if it was possible to bugger up 10 blades at once. Would be cool to see one work, though. We have to plan a field trip to one of those companies!
Merry Christmas....................Tony

Funny. I had thought about designing a slab saw with 4 or 5 blades, maybe 18 or 20 inch. This would require a motor with a couple horsepower on both the saw and the auto-feed for sure, but think of the production! (now, all I need is 5 more arms attached to my body, think of the cabbing you could get done! ;D

If you want to get a serious saw fix arrange a visit to the Yule Marble mine in Marble, Colorado. I think Labor Day weekend is the best time. We have arranged field trips for our rock club on that weekend. They mine 24x7x365 and during the winter it is coooolllldddd. They have to heat the water for the saws to keep it from freezing. They have a similar diamond cable set up. And huge heavy equipment to move the blocks of marble around.
The block of marble on the tomb of the unknown solders came from that mine. It is cracking and they have for the last couple years been mining for a replacement. The columns from the Lincoln memorial came from that mine too.
The have a bunch of marble they tossed down the hill for whatever reason it wasn't acceptable. When you visit you can take as much marble as you can carry in one trip to your car. And it's a pretty good walk.
It's been on TV and one of the Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe did an episode on it.
Plus, Marble is near Glenwood Hot Springs and you can revive your muscles in that natural hot springs. Or if your into the life styles of the rich and famous you can head the other direction and hang out in Vail.
I love Colorado, I wouldn't live anywhere else on the planet.
