Found this supplier online who sells AO 10 grit which is 2mm. This is the pure white AO which they state is more friable (breaks) than the brown kind. I've read that AO just rounds but given the size of these wouldn't you still get some grinding action? Just $3/1 lb,$12/5 lbs & $19/10 lbs. I'm thinking about trying some, thoughts? www.panadyneabrasives.com/Aluminum-Oxide-White-5-Lbs-AOw5Lbs.htm

It does have a habit of rounding. A tumbler probably doesn't have enough force within it to crack it. It think you will end up with a bunch of ~1.8 mm beads Mike. Most ceramic media is 5-8-10-etc aluminum oxide. Most common ceramic media is 98% aluminum oxide.
For coarse grind you should stick with SiC. It is brittle and will crack in the tumbler. Cracks sharp, cuts deep. That is what SiC is designed to do.
May be wrong. SiC and AO are both ceramics. AO about always rounds. SiC shatters.
I would not be surprised if it would round to smooth and polish in a vibe. If you tumble aluminum oxide ceramic media in a rotary with SiC 80 to rough it up and put it in a vibe I believe it would polish rocks in a vibe as it smoothed rubbing against each other and the rocks. Without adding any grit. That's why you can reuse aluminum oxide polish over and over.

Should have just sent you a PM O' Master of the Tumbling Arts Science.

You still use it in your vibe? Some times. About used up the AO 80. But I found a 5 gallon of AO 220 blast grit in an industrial junkyard for $25. Use it most. It does a fine transition from the rotary after letting SiC 30 breakdown. So in the vibe I only use AO 80 or AO 220 and then go straight to AO 14,000 polish.

Didn't you buy a Lot-O recently? Yes and I will be testing this material!! Dishwasher install, rotary finish. Then build vibe. I can only put in an hour or two a week so projects take forever.
