100% scraper. Classic sugar quartz(quartzite) artifact. Quartzite is material of choice when chert is not so available. TVA lakes in North GA, NC full of quartzite. If you ever get down to the Elk River as it flows into L Wheeler in Alabama contact me. When they lower Wheeler in winter about 3 feet and heavy rain washes the mud off the rock bars keep eyes peeled, artifacts are some of the finest. Elk River point. They are(unusually) long points. Note famous oblique transverse flaking at an angle. Probably the only place in US or in the world w/such flaking method. I have two frames full of these jewels. www.projectilepoints.net/Points/Elk_River.html

Order this book Mike. Points of TN river valley. Got a friend that is a mollusk diver at L Wheeler in N AL. He finds wicked points. I think he makes a small fortune selling them.

As always thanks for the great info James. I'll definitely have to get that book. A trip to Lake Wheeler sounds awesome. I've got the week after Christmas off if you're interested. Thanks.

If you have a kayak or canoe-there is a small island about 300-600 feet out. Want you to hit that island some time. I can give you google map of it if I can't make it. I think the town closest is Athens Al. But Wheeler has to be low and some rain on the rocks best.
Island is .1 miles north of Elk River Mills Road bridge. Just west of Athens AL. Have not been there in 10 years. I don't think anyone knows about the camp on that island. Certain that 10 years of erosion has brought more artifacts to surface.

That is a hot little spot. Other rock bars can be reached by canoe/kayak. I would spend my time on that island. The artifacts are by far more dense on the side closest to land. Wave action is primary form of erosion. If lake was at various levels between full pool and 3-4 feet low the erosion can be substantial. Most of the rocks are dull pastel chert. Real hard solid rock. Take a rake, the ones with solid 2 inch prongs and rake rocks at the water line up on shore.
