So who's in for the challange
Entries are now open for the 2017 Worldwide Rock Tumbling Contest (http://www.featherriverrocks.org/rockin-info/rock-tumbling-contest-drop-down2)got second last year and hoping to go one better this year. The rock selected for 2017 is picture jasper from Hayden Hill, California and it looks like a real challange. Already entered myself so hoping a few RTH members will come along for the ride as well.
Cheers Scott

I was going to enter last year, but never got around to it. I think I am gonna enter this year. May even start my course tumble at school with my students towards the end of the year.

I got my rocks on Thursday and just threw a few in a barrel this morning to see how they turn out. Got a little bit of time to mess around but i got a feeling some of these rocks are gonna have to be trimmed or grinded prior to coarse run. Some are pretty irregular, jagged, or contain multiple crevices.

I received my box-o-rocks today. They don't look like something that will get very shiny. The website calls them "picture jasper", but it looks more like rhyolite or wonderstone to me. Here's what they say on the contest website: Here's my box. It looks and feels pretty grainy, almost sandstone like. I'm guessing that it will only get a matte finish. They're going to start getting dizzy tomorrow.

From what I can find out on the internet as well as looking at the material in the picture I would say that although the competition rough is described as a Jasper it is really a type of wonderstone or rhyolite. Looks like it's going to be a tricky one😊

Got my box today. This stuff is beautiful and I hope it shines up. I have about 5 pounds of picture jasper here also and these both seem to have the same "chalky" appearance and I've been able to get that to shine. But I'm very new when it comes to identifying rocks. These are going in the barrel tomorrow and I'll check them once a week and see how they start shaping up. Good thing about signing up early is a little more time to play!

I was going to start a thread to see who is entering this year.....glad to see this one is already started. I haven't been on here much lately so I posted my stuff in another section. I started tumbling some of mine yesterday, looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Good luck to everyone who enters.
