The original caption said this was carved from a block of Brazilian agate before WWII. It is currently in Germany. Hard to tell scale, but my question is - How did they do this? Just days and weeks of work?

I've seen small bowls out of softer rock, like Fluorite and Onyx. It's hard to imagine doing that with Mohs=7 material.

Looks like a piece done by Idar Oberstein.

Been watching for a carving of Hornitos Poppy Jasper from Germany for years. Met the original miner one time at Snyders and he told me tales of 50 gallon drums of the finest poppy being shipped to Germany for carving. Yet in all my years of going to shows, I've yet to see even a picture of anything carved from Hornitos poppy. Guess all that jasper must be in European collections somewhere Too bad an Idar Oberstein poppy carving would really be a sight to see....Mel
