Coral form Georgia is pure, sound is called tinging. A good test of it's quality of silicification and lack of fractures.
It could be fashioned into a tuning fork. This piece is as found.

I once thought that beach agates had a distinctive "ring", but they have nothing on that. I was actually looking to see if you had an accomplish in the background adding sound effects. WOW!
Darryl.

Most of that coral is silicified sections of the original 3-4 foot brain looking round or egg shaped coral. The silica fills the big brain in sections and random shapes. The rest is soft and erodes away leaving the glassy part. Sometimes leaving a silicified tree like structure with branches. Or long horn shapes. Some will ring for like 30 seconds. This is a whole but small example coral. Pretty much a specimen. Bout 40 pounds. Inside is dead solid silica, probably a full cast. May have coral patterns, depends if it replaced or cast. Looks to be a cast

I once thought that beach agates had a distinctive "ring", but they have nothing on that. I was actually looking to see if you had an accomplish in the background adding sound effects. WOW! Darryl. Your agates would do the same ring thing if they came in long slender shapes like this Darryl. When snorkeling to the bottom of some center sections of the river the bottom is littered with big silicifications piled atop each other like a mass grave. The corals imbedded deep into the ancient silts and clays under the loose corals are rich in colors from mineral and salts absorption. The closer to the center of the river where it is deepest is the oldest most well colored material. It has been buried longest in the oldest silts and clays. Such removal requires heavy machinery and dealing with an angry environmental protection agency. Florida has outlawed all such digging except along the shore in rare cases. I don't think Georgia would care if you floated a track hoe down and dug. Georgia not so environmentally concerned, yet.

That is truly amazing! I have a large boulder of some type of yellow jasper out in my front yard. It came from Indian Pass several years ago, I had to roll the dang thing (too heavy to lift by myself!) uphill, over cacti and rocks to get it to the road. Used a long board to slide it into the truck. Actually, too heavy for TWO people to lift, lol.
Anyway, it also makes a sound, but not like a gong. If you tap it with a hammer or another rock, it sounds like glass. It made the "tinking" sounds as I rolled it up the hill over small rocks!

Earth tones...Hard rock, lol Blue Oyster Cult by MrMike. When walking on the coral rock bars at the river it sounds like chunks of slag glass under your feet. Notorious for slicing boat hulls. Wear your boots. And full coverage safety protection when using hammers.

Being a gardener, and knowing that you're a gardener, I was expecting so see this: I have lots of coral bells in my garden, although those aren't mine. You should make some coral wind chimes. Cut slabs, drill holes, and hang a clump of them up.

Ha, I wondered if "coral bells' would send a ring to a gardner's ears Jugglerguy. Your fire pit area is well planted, great job on that.
