Sea jasper, ocean jasper, a bunch of stuff from Rock Sheds mixed rough. Close up on a nice piece of jasper Mostly self collected from Lake Superior. A lot of granite and Unakite. Also some flint I found on a gravel road while climbing in Kentucky.

Nice, welcome from Kentucky. Some nice lake superior stones.

You got a nice shine on those. The Lake Superior rocks look familiar. I tumble a lot of rocks from there. Are you from Michigan?
There are two rocks in your batch that look like rhyolite that I find in the Keweenaw Peninsula. They're brown and tan. One is two rocks to the left of the black one with the red stripe, and the other one is in the center near the bottom. If that's the same thing, I only really find that in one spot. There's a lot of them there, but I don't find them elsewhere.

Those were all collected on vacation in Grand Marais, Michigan. I'm from Cleveland.

Those were all collected on vacation in Grand Marais, Michigan. I'm from Cleveland. That explains why they look familiar. I go camping every year in that area just to go rock hunting. I don't find those brown and tan rocks there though. I love the unakite, but bring way too much home. Did you find any agates? Did you try panning any black sand for gold? Did you stop in and say hi to Karen in the agate shop? I'm getting excited to go back. I have friends in Cleveland. Do you know Dave?

I know several Daves, but I'm not sure if any are the same Dave you know. We went in mid October, so the museum was closed. I found 1 pea sized piece of agate. I didn't realize panning for gold was an option. We mostly hiked and looked at waterfalls. I think we hiked 25 miles the time we were there.

I didn't walk 25 miles, because I walk very slowly up there. What falls did you see? I assume that you went to Tacquamenon Falls. There are some nice ones in Munising. Did you go to Sable Falls/dunes? There is very, very small gold in the black sand on the beaches. I've found lots of it. Unfortunately it's so small that the many specks together are hardly visible. It's fun just saying that you found gold though. When I go camping I start in Grand Marais and work my way east. Last year I went to white fish point for the first time, but only for about an hour. Here's a link to my trip report from a couple years ago.

We camped at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore right on the lake. It wound up being pretty chilly at night right on the lake, with 30 MPhil winds and mid 30s temperatures. We saw Bridal Veil, Miners, Munising, Mosquito, and Sable Falls. I also climbed up and down the log slide, would not recommend. We didn't head east from Grand Marais though. Only spent avout an hour staring at the ground for rocks. Very nice area. I would go back just for pasties.

I have never actually hiked Pictured Rocks. We took the boat tour. They're very picky about collecting rocks in the national park, so I don't go. I should go for the scenery though. I've been to Munising Falls and Sable Falls from your list. My camping trip was very chilly two years ago. Last year was much nicer.

My sister lives in Marquette. She is married to a genuine Yooper. She has lived up there long enough that she is probably considered a Yooper too. This is her recipe for pasty pie. My wife makes it too and the note on the bottom is my wife's. My wife and I are trolls, so if you follow her notes, it might not be a Yooper recipe any more. We love this either way.
Pasty Pie
Crust: Makes two bottoms and two tops.
3 cups flour 1 cup butter (cut into flour) 3/4 cup cold water Mix, roll and cut to shape.
Filling: 2 pies
4 large carrots, diced small large onion, diced small 3 large baking potatoes, diced small 1 lb. ground chuck (break pieces into bowl with veggies) 1 1/2 tsp. salt and pepper
Mix filling and put into crusts. Cut slits in top pie crusts. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Let set for 10 minutes.
Note: Some people like these topped with beef gravy, some like them with ketchup. They are delicious either way. I have substituted Pillsbury rolled crusts from the refrigerator section of the grocery store. They work well but the crust recipe has a richer, buttery taste.

I really like that black stone with the red stripe. I also like the granite stones a lot. Since your first batch was a mix of stones you purchased as well as stones you collected, I am curious as to which ones you like the most?

I liked the store bought stuff because it polished nicer, but I am also kinda partial to the stuff I collected on the beach!

I'm on the east side, in Willowick. You could come check out the Parma Lapidary Club sometime. Good group of people. We have the annual rock show coming up in North Olmsted in the middle of May.

Thanks Dave. I'm currently working on batch 2, things are taking forever in the coarse stage. But! pnce that happens I have a new (to me) double barrel lot-o to start playing with.

Thanks Dave. I'm currently working on batch 2, things are taking forever in the coarse stage. But! pnce that happens I have a new (to me) double barrel lot-o to start playing with. It's a slow process, but worth taking the time to get everything rounded to the level you like. I run 3 tumblers (36 pounds total) and never seem to produce enough to keep my Lot-O fully fed. So I just set everything aside and wait. And wait some more...
