Now I'm scared! You need AO polish which is typically 14,000 Tough finding AO after 1000. Think James found an AO 5,000 awhile back, don't recall where. jamesp ? Going from 1000 to polish should do ya fine. ETA: get AP polish anywhere, Rock Shed is where I get small grit/polish amounts. Kingsley North for bulk.

Do you have ceramic media? I'm no Lot-O user, but I recall them folks use small ceramics as filler. Rock Shed has that too. Jugglerguy Drummond Island Rocks <-- can't tag Chuck

Only used the 5000 a couple of times Bob, seemed redundant. Got as a sample from Lortone.

I use a mix of small and medium ceramics from The Rock Shed. I bought some from Kingsley North once that I didn't like as much. I use at least 30% in each load.
I store my grit in gallon milk jugs for large quantities. For the stuff I'm currently using, I use Rubbermaid Take Along boxes.

Not sure what you mean by last step. After final polish most folks are doing a quick burnish in the loto for a couple hours. I prefer and use borax but that is toxic to plants so if you are worried about that you can use a soap like dreft or even ivory soap flakes.
I use two tablespoons of borax and a little more water then I use in the rest of the steps. I put the rocks in wet add the borax then turn it on and squirt in enough additional water to get the consistency I like.
No trick for making day to day rocks into gems. Garbage in = semi shiny garbage out. Quality rough in = shiny gems out.
