Here's my latest batch. I'm quite pleased if I do say so myself. Thanks for looking! 1. Little quartz 2. Couple other group shots 3. Like the color differences in this one. 4. Just a rock 5. Pretty quartz 6. Love the smoky color 7. Red swirls 8. This looks like something grew in it 9. Can quartz be multi toned? 10. Flat and round. 11. Woody 12. My favorite. Some of these got an it of a rerun and some may get run again for some bruising but I adore them.

Nice shape and shine! A lot of those stones look to me like quartzite, which is as hard as quartz but is formed differently. Quartzite often has impurities like iron in it, and the impurities can give it many different colors. In my area, I find it in mixes of white, red, orange, pink and yellow, but mostly white and red, similar to the stone where you ask if it can be multi-toned. Your screen name suggests you are from SD, and the Black Hills have lots of quartzite, so perhaps that's where your quartzite traces back to.

Nice batch! Self collected material is rewarding. Keep them coming.

I like that red jasper (quartzite?) ... did yours hint at the colorful details before you tumbled it? I've been surprised by plain looking red rough that got pretty after tumbling. Nice rocks and nice polish, and good pics to boot. Really like the quartz too, you got some nice intact pieces there.

I'm getting a bit better at telling what red will come out with depth and what won't. I had this piece that didn't have any spark at all when it came out. Sometimes it's a complete surprise though. Luckily I like surprises!

We have a couple natural gravel pits behind me that I collect in. Thank you for the quartzite insight. I bet that is what quite a bit of this is.

Nice batch. I really like the "window" into #3 (or maybe that's just a color change - but it looks a little clear).

Nice group of tumbles. Its always interesting to see what people find in their on back yards. I know its a great feeling when you collect your own and tumble. Nice job.

Nice post Nice batch of tumbles. As was said self collected materials are always special - the fact that you collect them behind your house is special-er.

They look wet ! Great polish. Nothing like polishing up your own finds, especially from the local hood. If you can polish white quartz(2nd photo) without frosting it you have arrived. Remember how you did them...repeat your success.

Yes to the skill it took to get the white quartz to that quality. I agree that self-collected is often the most fun and becomes our fav.

Like playing hard to get, neglect pays off if you let em roll.
