I have never held one, so am unsure of the ID. A customer brought me three stones today that had belonged to his Father and had been in a house fire several years ago. They were covered in soot, molten plastic and other assorted gunk and didn't really resemble cabochons at all! I was quite busy, so told him to fill out a repair envelope and check back with me in 30 minutes. I cut away some of the gunk, then started carefully grinding until i exposed the stones. One was a nice piece of Jade, one was Jasper and then this piece. I just cleaned it up, so unsure of the hardness. Edit: I forgot to mention that he didn't know what it was either. Ever since he was a little boy he had called it the "Turtle rock". It's about the size of a quarter and pretty much standard thickness for a cab. Tried to load a pic of the back side, but photobucket isn't cooperating

Scott: about a 5 on the Mohs. Have not not done a streak test
ToiviO: Remember, this has been through a house fire, so could have changed the color. The pattern is not not out of the realm of possibilities for Greenstone.
Ziggy: Thanks, I'll check it out
Tela: Color is right, but I've never seen Olivine with a turtle shell pattern

I have a friend who ground through the dark green on one the other day, maybe he'll give it up for science.

The largest one known is 1 1/2" x 3". Pea sized ones are typical. Based on the fact that it was cabbed plus it is still quarter sized, would make it a fairly rare stone, but by the same token makes it even more unlikely to be a greenstone.

This one is, so one more strike against it

So the color and pattern is not all the way through on Greenstone? This one is, so one more strike against it Most greenstones like opals if your not careful you will lose the pattern and theres the aw s^&%t moment. Some are just dark green and some clearish like prehnite. Some the the colors go all the way through, few and far between. Like ziggy said most are the size you see in the pic compared to the penny. 1/2 inch long is a bigun.
