First puzzlement ...
I have a 15 lb barrel that has been running for a couple months now with some conglomerates that I picked up in Zapata Texas. One fairly good sized piece, just bigger than two fists side by side and several medium sized pieces.
My issue with this barrel is the grit isn't breaking down. Started with 46/70 back in February. Recharged with more 46/70 the first week of March and note card says "not much happening - let it run!" so I did.
Did a check on it today, and the grit seems as coarse as when I put it in the barrel. Just over 5 weeks and it hasn't broken down at all. Very odd. Added a little water and a handful of smalls today and figure I'll check on it in another month. Lots of ceramics in barrel.
Never had grit not break down like this and for the life of me I can't figure this one out.
Why isn't it breaking down ...
Thinking that maybe the lack of smalls might have something to do with it, but my next puzzlement ruins that idea.
Second mystery today was when I checked on my big honkin' Rio that I have running alone in another 15 lb barrel.
Nothing in barrel except one rock, a bunch of ceramic media, grit and water.
Grit is breaking down just fine in this barrel.
Started this one back in December. Have been through 30 grit for a month or so, ran 46/7-0 for awhile and it is on 60/90 now for the past month or more.
No smalls, just the one rock and ceramics and grit is always used up when I get around to checking on it.
But today when I checked, the water was gone! *laughed my ass off!* Never seen this one before.
There was plenty of water in it when I did the last check/add grit 3 weeks ago.
Where the heck did the water go?? No, it's not leaking out. Don't see how it could have evaporated in a sealed barrel.
Added some more water and some fresh 60/90 and will check back in a couple/few weeks.
Rock is progressing very nicely. Will be one heck of rock when finished.
Good new is that it's 5:08 and I can start drinking. Because I sure can't figure either of these out!
