A coworker heard I liked rocks. Over the years we have had many rock conversations. Well, today he brought "Lumpy" up to work and asked me to cut him in half for him. Lumpy is a geode that my coworker picked up (along with his father) over 50 years ago. It is a Brown County, Indiana geode. When he graduated from high school, Lumpy was there. When he got married, Lumpy was there. When he had his children, Lumpy was there. Every house he ever lived in, Lumpy sat out in the yard. Now Lumpy is going to get cut in half and given to his sons for Christmas this year. I can't wait to see what this looks like on the inside, but then again, I'm terrified something will go wrong with it.

Anticipation of a geode is often more than the result but the little fairy that lives in Lumpy needs to be free. Help her to escape her stony prison. Liking your rings too.

Can hardly wait to see inside ask if you can do an off center cut and get 1 slab from the middle?

Dave I have some here in my shop (Wife collects Geodes)...The ones that look like that are mostly solid (That I have cut)....And come from Kentucky.. Just my opinion though....Clean this one up on the exterior and buy another Geode for the two boys, than cut it,let them start another tradition... Wife has a whole one, that's been cleaned up,looks pretty sharp...

I offered to cut a slab from the middle for him if it ended up being solid, then give the boys each side. He didn't want to do that. He is quite sentimental about it. It's been with him for over 50 years of his life and I guess he feels he is "giving" his sons all of that history when he gives them each a half. It's quite heavy and feels pretty solid so I'm fairly certain this is gonna be solid.
He is certain this is from Brown County, Indiana. He grew up a couple of counties over and it was his first trip going away with his pops and some family friends. They picked up the geodes themselves from a creek bed.
I will most definitely post pictures when it is cut. I. CAN'T. WAIT.

Sounds like it's the latter. Thanks very much. Dave

You have to drink 2 of your diet cokes getting dusty on top of my fridge! This one will please them no matter what. jet, you cannot harm it.

Scott, I was not looking for one, but if you're offering... Besides, I think we're getting close to me coming back down there and hitting the taco joint. Beers on me. Doctor just gave me clearance to take off my splint on the fingers. Also had an injection today (ouch). May have to start reducing material on my tile saw. I was going to use Randy's Garage Rocker "pull" technique, but with the weather lately, I may be standing in from of the saw. Dave

I get stuff like this all the time - people bring me random rocks they pick up for whatever reason and want me to make stuff out of them and I find it very hard to say no. A few months back our family pastor lost his wife - well he picked up an ugly gray junk rock off her grave and is waiting for me to make three pendants out of it for their three daughters. I started cutting on it and the dang thing just crumbled in my hands. Luckily I was able to make three peanut shaped cabs out of it that took a decent shine - so I drilled a hole in each one and installed a pinch bail. It is what it is - he'll be happy with it I'm sure.

Just a hint as I've cut a lot of that type geode. A good many are just solid quartz balls or have small hollow centers. The best ones often have a few loose crystals rattling around so that is a good indicator for a hollow, as is weight if you have a quartz cobble of similar size for comparison. Some folks also roll them gently across the cement floor of their garage. The hollows are supposed to kind of sound that way while the solids just sound like any other rough rock. The rolling thing did not work for me as Warsaws don't roll that well but the rattling thing was great. Question for the fossil guys. I've noticed a lot of Warsaws have an organic look to them . A guy told me a lot of them are actually fossil crinoid heads. True? ....Mel

I was looking through large pile of gravel and found a geode It was the size of a dime. The center was hollow and no color After being washed. Its cool because it's so small.

Here are the pictures, as promised. I thought I would be able to take more pictures, but he was so excited he ended up meeting us at the house and picking it up. He is absolutely in love with it, so I'm thrilled for him. And I only grumbled a little that he didn't let me cut him a slice of it for himself.
