Howdy All
I need some input and advice. I just received in the mail a questionnaire for jury duty from the United States District Courts.
It as 32 distinct questions which include:
· Last book read · TV shows watched · Bumper sticker on your car
Along with other prying questions. Is this normal? Is this how they pick jurors now ?
Thanks
Ed

I expect that they have a defendant accused of smashing a vehicle into a well-known author while driving a car with a bumper sticker advertising a reality TV show Questions like that are becoming more normal. They are trying to speed up the process by pre-screening folks. The lawyers for both prosecution and defense are going to ask their own set of questions to try to detect bias in potential jurors. So presenting a bunch of unscreened folks, many of whom will likely be rejected anyway by the defense or prosecution during jury selection, can really waste a lot of court time.

Many years ago. No such questionnaire then. On the local level I been called a few times what they will infer from my questionnaire ? My Bumper sticker is I’D RATHER BE GRINDING ROCKS ought to leave those high price attorneys scratching their noggins. Anyways my answers will save us all time… Thanks Ed

Wow never had that happen when I went on jury duty. Would seem to be a great opportunity if one did not feel like serving. I freaking gar on tee that if you answered the three questions:
Book: Turner Diaries, Guns Magazine
TV programs: Cops, CSI, FOX news
Bumper sticker: Rebel flag, Molan Labe, and NRA Defense attorney would take one look and yore outta there....Mel

Don’t want to give the wrong impression Actually I feel honored and duty bound to be part of the Justice system unfortunately I don’t think the Justice system will feel the same after my truthful answers
and none of them are particularly political

Not to sound bad but I'm deaf... The jury duty card I got in the mail years ago I had my wife call to tell them what I need to maybe make it work. ... Never received any more letters about jury duty. But I would never wish deafness on my worst enemy.

Dave Well thanks Dave for your reinforcement of my original intent Not much of game player and pretty truthful & fair to a fault I was just wondering if this is new way of picking jurors? If it is --I’m not sure it’s the best way I would think that it would generate a lot of dishonesty the best I can tell-- most people hate jury duty. and try to avoid it Do you look at jury duty as an honor & a duty?

This is the back of my truck. Feel free to send it in as yours. You will never have to serve on a jury!

Never got one of those forms to fill out, but I always found that if I showed up for jury duty wearing levi's and a Greatful Dead t-shirt, I was one of the first to be excused.

In my ute I considered jury duty an honor. Then they found out I worked for the government so I didn't lose work pay and they started hitting me over and over again as often as was allowable. After the umpteenth time and several long deliberations and hung juries, I got to say I started to consider it an irritation. Fortunately, I wound up doing more law enforcement oriented work and defense attorneys kept keeping me off juries until finally it became a rarity and that was OK by me....Mel

I'm really starting to hate this survey questionnaire so much so I may implement Henry David Thoreau Civil Disobedience
Some of these questions are infringement of privacy.
Who would, or even desire, to supply truthful written answers ?
Why does the American judicial system need a written record?
They should not, nor should they expect, truthful written answers.
American Courts & Jury selection is a dialectical process That the best way to ferret put a person intentions. This as the potential to change our tradition. Very bad!
They are demanding something I may not be prepared to offer.

I got the letter for my county a year or two ago, one week commitment. Listened to the recording every evening to see if my group was to go in. Thursday night my number came up for friday, so I went in, Sat in the room for like 4 hours, the other group went in to a trial, ours settled without a trial so they sent us home.

well I'll answer honestly that is if I don't protest it
it just seems like there a better way to weed out undesirables and still maintain a healthy jury system
I don't know I'm really troubled by this...

just something like the bumper sticker question gets me its so stupid I have silly bumper sticker so do I tell them about it? Or do I be dishonest & just say I have none? obviously what their wanting to know is politically motivated but I don’t want to tell them either way… I’m losing whatever little mind I have certainly in no position to judge anyone peer or other wise Maybe I just tell the Honor that In written form ….
