Cleaning up in the yard yesterday I came across this spider. My first thought was...cool...another Black Widow. I like finding them, but feel bad when I exterminate them. When I looked closer I realized that it didn't really look like a 'normal' Widow. So I grabbed a jar and caught her. Have any of you seen this kinds?? MrMike rockpickerforever Sorry for the bad pics. But I'm not going to open the jar again. Bottom has the hour glass like you would expect, but the red continues around the abdomen and up onto the top side. Kind of reminds me of the Australian Redback Spider. But I can't see where they are in the US, and I don't think they have the hour glass. This is like a mutant cross between the two.

Yup, it's a widow. They sometimes have those red dots on their back. None of the ones I've caught in my office have had them, but I've seen it before. That shiny round body, spindly legs and the crazy web are dead giveaways.

Southern black widow LATRODECTUS MACTANS, other than the hourglass other markings are variable. I've seen them with & without red spots on the back. On some of my property there are lots of flat limestone rocks on the ground, lots of widows underneath. Mail it in an unmarked package to Garage Rocker or txrockhunter so they can take pictures......

A very tardy answer, as I was away on vacation. I had never seen one like that, but I guess the hourglass is the tip off. Jean
ETA - I do know they are extremely variable.

It's a Tennessee redback! Woot!
As other have stated, clearly a widow. And a gorgeous bloodline too. I'd be raising those and try to make a red body widow.

I usually do relocate them further into the woods whenever I find them, if they are someplace that I feel that could be a danger. I've always thought they act pretty docile, but would NEVER handle one like that. Nope...just creepy!

Was cleaning out the storage room at the office, reached into a box, pulled out some envelopes and this... Evidently, they are fond of that place.
