He loves them all and makes great use of them.

One of my daughters just told me that it is hard to hold a smile so smiling photos tended to turn out blurry, so they were told to look grim - easier to hold for the long time periods required.

Oh, found one. Not real old, our "official" wedding picture from 2005. Russ I thought the groom was supposed to have the gun pointed at him. Cyndi's brother walking her down the "aisle" How's that? Russ

For a bit here time is short and internet will be a little restricted until we get some stuff sorted out. Russ

OK, I know I am way late in the game, but I thought I'd share anyhow. This family photo excludes my youngest brother, so I'm guessing this is around 1965 or 1966. This is a photo that was taken with my dad. I'm in the plaid shirt. Fast forward to high school. This photo was in a local paper where I participated in a disaster drill. I had a latex blob put on my arm with a broken chicken bone sticking out. I was supposed to have a broken arm. Maybe this scenario set the stage for me to go into the fire department. Photo was taken around 1978. Since Randy Garage Rocker did it, here's my sport shot. Spring, 1978. Photo with my parents at a function in early 1979. This was senior year in high school. A photo of my wife and I from the late 80's. Photo with my son who is almost 2 years old. Late 1993. Photo at work investigating a fatality fire. 2015. I think this is the most recent family photo that we have. We really don't do photographs alot, but this was from my retirement lunch in January of 2016. Photo is with my wife, my son, and his girlfriend. Yep, most of us didn't know what camera to look at. Dave

Damn, Dave, was this right before you got the Joanie Loves Chachi gig?
Haha! Just busting your chops, buddy. Was that the mile relay you were running there? Too relaxed for a sprint. I hated the 400, made me puke almost every time. Thanks for digging up the pics, good looking family.

Funny, they used to measure the races then in yards instead of meters. This thread has been a great jaunt down memory road. It even caused me to search for a box that I've had no luck in finding yet. It'll turn up one day. Gotta thank Ann fantastic5 for bringing this up. It was actually fun to go through the old stuff. Dave

Well, it’s time to reveal the Big Secret: my age. All you young whippersnappers celebrating the Sixties make me feel left-out sometimes. You missed all the real fun, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War and other events that are now only “history” to you. 1Dave and I and maybe some other members were up close and personal when those things happened. Be thankful you youngsters missed all that. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the other profiles. This is my tale: Shootin’ with Dad, age 3, near Blackfoot, ID: Me on the farm in Idaho, about the same age, maybe 4. Loved those puppies! And what about those patched overalls? Depression days. More puppy love: Home from college, 1954. How I miss that 30-inch waist! Rockhunting with my first wife, Helen, and oldest daughter, Deborah, near Challis, ID, 1956. That's an authentic Bannock-Shoshone papoose board, a gift from a great-aunt who taught at the Indian School on the Reservation near Fort Hall, ID. I have two other children by that marriage, son Matthew and daughter Leslie. Sometimes marriages don't work out... Hunting Bruneau Wood, 1957, with members of the Nampa ID club, me on the left. Digging Succor Creek Thundereggs, Owyhees 1957. We rolled some out the size of basketballs that day – too bad they weren’t all that pretty inside. But it was great fun. Selling Rocks, Nampa ID Club Show, 1957. My first experience as a vendor. Did OK. Wedding Day, second wife Karen and the love of my life; San Jose CA, 1971 Here we are 46 years later, she’s looking great – me, not so much. But we’re very happy.

Good to finally get a look at you, Rick gemfeller , and see a little bit of your history. Of course we all knew you were older, a younger person would not have that much knowledge and experience you have.
This thread has turned into a great trip down memory lane for many of us.
Thank you for sharing those!
ETA - I've got a pic of my mom from about the time you were out rock hunting with your first wife. Times were simpler then.
I hear mom was a pretty good shot, lol. Photo taken around 1953, near White Sands, NM, where my parents met. Dad was stationed there for two years while in the army. I don't think they were into rock hounding, though. Jean

gemfeller, You and your wife look wonderful! Yeah, I missed a lot of those nasty "historical" things, but my first marriage was hell on earth. So, to you, I guess I should ask if you were always a rockhound- sure looks like it. I would have loved to have lived out west and hunted down some of my very own bruneau. *sigh*

Thanks rockpickerforever. Your comment makes me think of a great quote I ran into from one of my idols, Dr. Thomas Sowell. "It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance." Your Mom looks great -- I've always had a "thing" for armed women. Maybe looking back life then seems simpler but it wasn't -- just a different set of complicated problems.

Yes, marriages can be unpredictable. I've been a rockhound/cab cutter since I was about 17 years old. Must be in the genes. My Dad was a prospector/rockhound/cab cutter and I became a total addict the day he picked up an ordinary hunk of rock and quickly turned it into beautiful agate cab. Magic! On the day in question we were hunting for fine quality Bruneau petrified wood, not jasper. A couple of club members slipped off unknown to the rest of us and returned with some really nice material. The rest of us came up empty. They wouldn't share their secret location and that's one of several reasons I've never been fond of gem clubs. I'm sure some are different but not the 3 I've joined.

gemfeller, Thanks for providing this RTH meeting as we lived close but were not able to meet spatially. What? No photos of your newspaper days? The day the dam broke may not be one you want to recall, but there had to be some good days.

The day the dam broke may not be one you want to recall, but there had to be some good days. Dave, sorry I missed you on our recent Utah trip. We were very close to you but our schedule was too tight. Hopefully we'll have the chance to meet soon. I have one shot from my reporting days -- it's a spoof photo -- and I was afraid folks would laugh at it. Maybe I'll post it. I don't have many pictures from those ink-stained-wretch days. Wish I had one of me and my desk during the Yellowstone earthquake reporting I did back in '59. I did rewrite, which means I was the guy who put together literally hundreds of reports from our stringers, LEO, phone-callers and wire services. I literally had wire copy stacked 2 feet high on my desk and had to sort through it all under deadline pressure to put together a hopefully accurate story for the early edition. It was the toughest reporting day of my life. I was on that story for 27 days straight and never got a by-line. Those days rewrite people didn't get by-lines even though much of the original reporting was my own. All the glory went to our main stringer at the scene. I did get a Pulitzer nomination out of it -- but no cigar.
