I joined in August by the looks of things but haven't introduced myself yet.
My youngest son (6) has been a rockhound since he had had pants with pockets so I decided to help him with his hobby.
I bought a 33b a couple of months ago and have done our first final polish. Now I'm just doing the first stage as I've bought a vibe tumbler (this I'll start a thread about over in the main part of the forum).
Our first major fossicking expedition was to the local landscape centre where the guy gave us a sugar bag and let us fill it for $5 with petrified wood. Next we drove a couple of hours to the beach and spent half a day picking up a variety of rocks and sea glass. Finally we spent 5 days at a campground in the mountains called thunderbird park which is renowned for its thunderegg deposits.
We probably have enough rough for a few years tumbling. I wouldn't have even looked sideways at a shiny rock 6 months ago but now, I can't get enough of them.

Thanks all for the welcome.
MrMike, I guess it is. I'd never heard of rockhounding before I started researching tumbling for my son. I'm pretty sure fossicking is widely used throughout Australia.

Great to see another Aussie on here. I'm only about 1000 km (a bit over 600 miles) south of Queensland depending where exactly you are. It is a big state.

Skuta, welcome to the forum from Southern Utah. Someday I'll get to Australia. We have some great material to be collected locally. But Australia has some wonderful rocks too: Tiger iron, Noreena jasper, Opal of all kinds, Variscite, Rainforest jasper, Chrysphrase, Mookaite. I know I'm missing a few. I'm sure someone will chime in. Lynn
